Why are activist opposing oil and gas pipelines? Because of short-term and long-term dangers. A recent report from @BillKitchen2: reveals that pipeline companies are using crappy, old pipe to increase their profits, setting up for catastrophic failures in the short-term while delivering fossil fuels that will cause centuries of in the long-term. truthout.org/articles/pipeline

Really excellent piece on + impacts in @TheEconomist We need to prepare now for the coming storms. As ever, poorer countries are likely to suffer more. There is nothing better than good governance and robust infrastructure to deal with the .

Unfortunately, we seem to have to switch from
or to or

I expected catastrophic events decades ago (just listen to the science),
and I knew it would be a process of decay and not quick destruction in the "end",
but the speed (never mind El Nino) shocks even me.
So is this already what a "tipping point" look like?

Landmark ‘kids’ climate trial begins: how science will take the stand

US youths are taking the state of Montana to court for supporting the fossil-fuel industry rather than protecting the environment and their health.

Went for a walk this morning and I saw only two insects (this little one and a pill bug crossing the sidewalk). I’m in a city in northern Portugal. There were so many blooms but where are the bees?

US government agencies issue El Niño watch: 62% of El Niño developing in May-July. After years with lots of La Niña conditions, this might mean a jump in global temperatures, and lots of climate disruption in various parts of the world.

There is something inherently wrong with
thinking.

The disjuncture began with the inception of the IPCC and the definition of its role:

"The role of the IPCC is to assess on a comprehensive, objective, open and transparent basis the scientific, technical and socio-economic information relevant to understanding the scientific basis of **risk of HUMAN-INDUCED CLIMATE CHANGE**, its potential impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation." (emphasis my own)

Notice the preconception of human causation and the lack of consideration of natural climate variability.

Actual global climate dynamics have been misunderstood and misrepresented since this blatantly biased beginning. Focus on human produced atmospheric (anthropogenic) CO2 as the Global Average Surface Temperature (GAST) thermostat have forever twisted understanding of natural climate variability, and the relationship between climate and weather, ever since.

Focus on GAST anomalies rather than raw instrumental temperature measurements have further obfuscated the relationship between climate and temperature, aka weather.

Even worse, focus on temperature as the sole indicator of climate variability ignores the disparity within the averaged global temperature instrumental records among urban, rural, analog, digital, satellite and proxy temperature records.

As these disparities are magnified in the mainstream stenographic press, it is no wonder that the public has little understanding of climate, reacting to fear-mongering press, industry and government rather than the work of independent climate scientists not in thrall to the forces of information control and dissemination.

Yes, climate science is complicated, obtuse and difficult for lay people to understand, especially as disseminated in technical professional journals. However, the truth is out there, someone once said, and it can be understood by the lay public if properly written and illustrated.

My self-imposed task is to translate esoteric climate science into terms popularly understandable, and to counter the widespread climate change obsession in government and the popular mind.

Fossil-fuel propaganda written into state law is an affront to nature.
Methane is a highly potent greenhouse gas that accelerates global warming and climate disruption.
Republicans are actively working to make the planet unlivable in return for $M's of campaign cash and the accumulation of political power it pays for.

Finally, interesting corollary from Lenore: Just as we analyze (subconsciously or consciously) what we would do if war came to us (literally or through military participation), we need to be asking ourselves how will we react when the effects of impact us more fully, as it is already impacting others.

This was one week ago. Between Urals and Rockies, the atmospheric circulation between Polar Circle and Tropic is utterly shot. The Temperate zone is absent throughout the atmosphere on 1/4 of the globe, it's either subtropical or polar, with one huge conjoined . Shit gettin fucking real, we're not just fucking up but *fundamentally altering* weather patterns continent-wide.

Note the entirely normal, *almost textbook* jetstream pattern between Rockies and Urals. // @terliwetter @rahmstorf @sarfeo
