August rainfall relative to normal around Alaska showed considerable variability, but except for portions of the eastern Interior was mostly above normal, and in portions of Southcentral and western Alaska rainfall was way above normal. This same basic pattern prevailed in June and July too. .

Dramatic contrast in July precipitation in and around Alaska in ERA5 courtesy of ECMWF/Copernicus using a normals 1991-2020 baseline. Parts of western and Southcentral much wetter than usual, with some areas with twice the normal rainfall. Eastern mainland Alaska, Southeast and most of the Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories were considerably drier than average.

Pan-Arctic July 2023 temperature departures from the 1991-2020 average from ERA5 courtesy of ECMWF/Copernicus. Most of the Greenland Ice Sheet, northwest Canada and northern Alaska were exceptionally warm. Cooler than average July northeast Canada and most of the Scandinavian . July temperature departures are always small over the central Arctic Ocean because heat goes into melting snow and sea ice.

July 2023 temperature departures from the 1991-2020 average (ºF) across Alaska and NW Canada. Mid-summer departures of 6 to 11ºF above normal (north Slope eastward into northern Yukon and northwest NWT) are astounding. Anchorage area & Kenai Peninsula westward to southwest mainland only bastion of below normal for the month.

Utqiaġvik, July 2023 average temperature of 48.4F (9.11C) edges out July 2019 (48.3F, 9.06C) as the warmest month on record. The low temperature for the month of 33F (+0.6) marked only the third July to remain above freezing the entire month. Decreasing nearshore is part of the driver of the increase in recent years. Unbroken climate observations at Utqiaġvik since late 1920.

And it begins: July was the warmest month on record at Eagle, The NWS cooperative observations put the average temperature at 65.5F (18.6C). This exceeds the previous warmest month of June 2004, when the average temperature was 65.2F (18.4C). The previous warmest July was 2007, with an average temperature of 64.1F (17.8C).
There are about 100 years (not consecutive) of reliable climate observations at Eagle.

Alaska temperature and precipitation departures from normal for the first half of July. Very wet north and west, very dry Southeast. This kind of west-to-east contrast across is common in the cold season but unusual in mid-summer when, small scale features tend to dominate, though there's a hint of that in the temperatures.

Temperatures for early summer 2023 for Alaska overall are running slightly below than the 1991-2020 average, as seen in the ACCAP Alaska statewide temperature index. @Climatologist49 and I developed the index in order to answer questions like "has it been hot/cold in Alaska lately?" Alaska's a big place with widely varying climates, and the index tries to account for that. You can play along at home at:

90F (32.2C) at Eagle Airport at 2pm AKDT Friday. I believe this is the first "official" 90F in Alaska since early August 2021 (last summer's highest 89F).

How gray has it been this early summer in Alaska? From our colleagues at the World Climate Service, here's the ERA5 ranks of May-June sunshine relative to the 1993-2022 period. A huge swath of South Central & Southwest had less sun this year than any May-June in the past 30 years.

Lots of good data in the article though I find it a bit all over the place. All our major dams are below normal levels. declared the onset of last July 4.
