@marcdaalder Are pollution cuts enough? Are there risks in relaxing the drive to reduce emissions? Too often a small blip of good news is followed by worse. #ClimateOptimism isn't enough. Also 2022 was still showing impact of Covid restrictions. #CovidIsntOver but travellers are resuming their contributions to emissions including air travel. If National and ACT become government road travel will get more incentives too.

The fact is I don't make the same arguments in 2023 as I did in 2019. Between the acceleration of climate disasters and super-fast-growing #Renewables economy, I don't have to. The world changed. That's gained ground that should be celebrated even as we acknowledge humans still aren't moving fast enough and of course outright villains yet abound. Take a breath. Feel good. Then get back to work.

Covid reminded humans everywhere that there's a whole world going on outside our cars and homes and giving streets back to humans is just plain better. Quite a lot of us picked up bikes for the first time in our adult lives & reminded ourselves that we actually love it & would like to see a whole lot more of it. All that's a one way trip too.

Things can be so damned gloomy and dark it's easy to forget how much has changed in just the last few years alone. Renewables are competing and defeating fossil fuels in an increasing number of arenas and becoming a clear dollars-and-cents winner. That's a one way trip. Classic #ClimateDenialism is functionally dead & more humans come to climate awareness every year. That too is a one way trip.

Words matter. If I'm honest I never really identified with the terms #EcoAnxiety or #ClimateGrief. I have #ClimateOutrage. Some days it's all I can do to stop myself from opening my window and shouting at the world for how reckless we're still being at this very late date. But not every day.

Next week is our last week of the semester, and we'll focus on what we can do about #ClimateChange. I think it's super-important to leave students feeling empowered to #ActOnClimate and have a sense of #ClimateOptimism.

This generation has grown up with so much doom & terribleness in their world. But we can't give up, there's no #PlanetB. We must recognize that individual and system change is going to be hard, but is necessary & possible.
