"This is not a remotely fair deal for those of us on the 'putting stuff up on the web for free' side of the equation. It doesn’t matter whether it’s illegal or not—though legislation is probably the only way to get the tech industry to stop it—because the social contract is broken." @baldur
Baldur's clear-eyed takes on the hype and risks of tech's current fascination with #AI continues. Has the #Cluetrain been derailed? ☹️

If only accounts could earn the awareness and distribution instead of buying it... This was our original discussion/direction when advocating for #SocialMedia growth. The intent was #Cluetrain, not #AdWeek
I started my first internet agency before AT&T's banner ad debuted on Wired (now @WIRED) The point then, as now, is PEOPLE. But people do interact with orgs, it should just be on the people's terms, free of unwanted noise. #VRM

"But if your blog doesn't have RSS or Atom, you shoot yourself in the foot.
You completely give up control of your traffic to search engines and social platforms. Along with email newsletters, RSS is among the few options remaining to bloggers for establishing a direct communication channel and relationship with readers. With no gatekeepers." @amoroso 💯

@rpch @dweinberger Yep, I was all about the #ClueTrain Manifesto back then, too.
For years I said I'd consider paying for Twitter if it offered more control over my experience, but nothing serious ever materialized.
For years I ignored my better judgement and neglected my own blog, prioritizing Twitter instead, even as everything about it got worse every year.
You get what you pay for, though, and I'm enjoying my experience here, so I'm happy to start supporting zirk.us with a monthly contribution. 👍🏽

"Personal stories on personal blogs are historical documents when you think about it. They are primary sources in the annals of history, and when people look back to see what happened during this time in our lives, do you want The New York Times or Washington Post telling your story, or do you want the story told in your own words? " Monique Judge 💯
And make sure you have a damn RSS feed, too!

I love the friction that makes companies think twice about engaging on here, but I'm not sure what the ideal solution is, either.
Should every business host their own instance? Maybe trade organizations will step up and host instances for their members?
It took YEARS for Twitter to become a worthwhile minefield for companies to navigate, and most aren't going to abandon it anytime soon.
Hopefully the #Fediverse evolves to embody the ideals of #Cluetrain and they never find a place here. 🤷
"We’re at a fork in the road, and it seems like we should be looking to take the other path. The one that is open, not closed. The one that gives us more freedom, not less. The one that pushes the power out to you, the users, rather than the latest billionaire." @mmasnick

"The #Cluetrain Manifesto" was a pivotal book for me in understanding how companies had to adapt their #communication to suit the modern #Internet age. It's great that after all these years the original site is still around and the book is now free. I honestly believe it's still essential reading.

@VinCrosbie @DrProf As a '70s reporter/editor, I was happily ignorant of the advt/circ/business/econ side of the newspaper's "Chinese wall."
I wish more newsfolks & educators had listened to you, @dangillmor , @davew & the Cluetrain folks 20+ yrs ago.
As a tech writer in the '80s, I was distracted by #hypertext pre-Web; then of course by HTML after '90. And I read the #Cluetrain Manifesto in '99, but still felt ME&M was "somebody else's job," much different skills & training. Mea culpa.
Back in January 2010, I wrote a guest post for @chuckwendig's blog, which I just dug out of the Wayback Machine and reposted on my site because it's arguably more relevant than it was back then.
"It’s like a blog on training wheels, for bloggers too stupid or boring to put together a compelling paragraph or three, and social media gurus who don’t like dealing with people all that much.
Ev and Biz clearly had no idea the monster they were creating."

Always happy to see the #cluetrain tag. (Hey, @davew , how many of that manifesto gang are on Mastodon?)
Theory: News media companies missed the cluetrain in 1994, did not make community-forums, BBSes (or 1999 blogs) a core of their websites.
Theory2: Big Tech missed the cluetrain by being too big, authoritarian, top-down, centralised, rancorous, greedy, capitalist, fascist.
Theory3: Maybe #Fediverse is a ray of hope.
Questions: Can it be made easier to serve and join?
Theory1: Journalism companies (TV, newspapers) mostly missed the #cluetrain that online could preserve (1994) or revive (2022?) their presence as a host of #local #community, by being part of the conversation -- not just using a new medium as a pipe to deliver its same old stuff.
Theory2: Communication-and-community-savvy online-natives see "journalists" as vampires lurking on servers to suck in info and search for things to "report" sensationally & for profit.

Newspapers once *were* "of the community" -- big downtown building, public meetings, hosted summer camps, "neediest family" drives, Christmas carol sings on the front steps, legions of paperboys (and girls, later), pre-1940 "free ice in the summer," sports teams & leagues...
Maybe just circulation-promotion to the business side, but it was participatory community-building too, as was local news.
Online, newspapers missed the #Community #Cluetrain
"Nascent Web publishing efforts have their genesis in a burning need to say something, but their ultimate success comes from people wanting to listen, needing to hear each other’s voices, and answering in kind."
Rick Levine, The Cluetrain Manifesto, 1999
Still the most relevant book about internet culture ever written. #Cluetrain
- So that was the second thing, the naivety of not knowing is it’s own joy. To paraphrase Chris Locke in #Cluetrain, first learn to speak as a real person. (“Real person” pauses, then goes back and adds a hashtag to Cluetrain to help #TheMachine categorise and Index said person)
- and with this comes another joy in having a fraction of the followers or Greek Chorus sized timeline. It *doesn’t* matter (beyond the way everything matters). Not needing an audience empowers freer personal expression.
