My mother worked for a while in the factory, nearly every woman Bankie did at some point in their lives, with most of the men working in John Brown’s shipyard and supporting industries. After the closure the site became a massive and successful business park. They used to say there’s always jobs in Clydebank.

It rang its siren twice every weekday morning: 7 45 AM and 10 or 15 minutes later. I guess this was the start and end of shifts. You could hear it all over Clydebank. We moved from Roseberry Place at one end of the factory site to the new high flats at the top of Singer Street and so we had a magnificent view of the whole factory.

Carving of HMS Agamemnon on a Clydebank tenement at 421 Dumbarton Road.
Built by William Beardmore and Company at the Dalmuir Naval Construction Works, HMS Agamemnon was the largest warship built on the Clyde at the time it was launched in 1906.

Clydebank Town Hall. Designed in a Renaissance style by James Miller and built in 1902. This is a beautiful building which luckily only suffered minor damage in the Clydebank Blitz in March 1941.

At 7am on a Sunday the Great Western Road out of #Glasgow is quiet and for a wee while it's a pleasure to walk it. Here are some photos from this morning's walk, 6.7 miles up GWR to the Hardgate roundabout, then down through Clydebank to Dumbarton Road, home to Old Drumchapel via Yoker Mill Road.

“The remains of a #Roman fortlet have been discovered in West Dunbartonshire.
New technology has enabled the #archaeology team at Historic Environment Scotland (HES) to uncover the structure after attempts to find it failed in the 1970s and 1980s.
The fortlet once stood next to the Antonine Wall.”

The Last of the Titans
Titan cranes were once amongst the most powerful cranes on the planet. Of the eleven that are left in the world, four can be found on the banks of the Clyde in western Scotland.
These are the Stobcross Crane, the Barcley Curle Crane (both in Glasgow), the Titan in Clydebank and the Janes Watt Dock Crane in Greenock.
