Another New Way to Measure Distance in the Universe: Baryon Acoustic Oscillations

We can never have enough ways to measure distance in the Universe. Researchers have proposed a new method that uses baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO), traces of the Big Bang that formed when the Universe was 380,000 years old. The early Universe was so hot and dense that waves spread through matter like a fluid. The Universe's subsequent expansion froze these waves into the large-scale structure of the cosmos - but now they're 500 million light-years across. By detecting these waves, astronomers can map out distances in the Universe in regions that are billions of light-years away from us.

For the observant: I used the Cosmic Microwave Background (abbreviated as CMB by cosmologists) map as a texture for the Core-Mantle Boundary (a abbreviated also as CMB by planetary physicists). Confused?
Cosmologists stole the acronym, so I steal their map.

I don’t care if the floaty rocks pan out, I’m loving the chat on social media because it’s science done in real time. Reminds me of the data claiming signatures from , when pretty much all the world experts joined a group of all things to discuss. Also of how expert thinking on (droplets vs aerosols) evolved in real time on 🐦.

"Large-scale power loss in ground-based CMB mapmaking"

<<All current CMB mapmaking methods are vulnerable to model error bias...
The size of the bias is... important for ground-based measurements of the unpolarized CMB due to the presence of largescale atmospheric noise there, but is much less important for polarization measurements or space-based telescopes.>>

"The first light in the universe helps build a dark matter map"

"In the 1960s, astronomers began noticing a pervasive microwave background visible in all directions. Thereafter known as the Cosmic Microwave Background (), the existence of this relic radiation confirmed the Big Bang theory, which posits that all matter was condensed onto a single point of infinite density and extreme heat that began expanding ca. 13.8 billion years ago.

Around the same time, scientists observed that the rotational curves of galaxies were much higher than their visible mass suggested. This meant that either Einstein's Theory of General Relativity was wrong or the universe was filled with a mysterious, invisible mass."
