Another New Way to Measure Distance in the Universe: Baryon Acoustic Oscillations
We can never have enough ways to measure distance in the Universe. Researchers have proposed a new method that uses baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO), traces of the Big Bang that formed when the Universe was 380,000 years old. The early Universe was so hot and dense that waves spread through matter like a fluid. The Universe's subsequent expansion froze these waves into the large-scale structure of the cosmos - but now they're 500 million light-years across. By detecting these waves, astronomers can map out distances in the Universe in regions that are billions of light-years away from us.

Thereafter known as the Cosmic Microwave Background (#CMB), the existence of this relic radiation confirmed the Big Bang theory, which posits that all matter was condensed onto a single point of infinite density and extreme heat that began expanding ca. 13.8 billion years ago.
Around the same time, scientists observed that the rotational curves of galaxies were much higher than their visible mass suggested. This meant that either Einstein's Theory of General Relativity was wrong or the universe was filled with a mysterious, invisible mass."
