@craigmaloney When i started Carnegie Mellon in 1989, i was issued an email address that was: first initial, last initial, two (random?) alphanumerics. It was a weird sort of privacy— just knowing someone’s name wasn’t enough to know their email address— it was actually kinda nice!
I wonder if any old #CMU folks know if that was actually the reason.
Robots need room to play, too. #CMU is asking the#Pittsburgh Planning Commission to approve a new development with outdoor space for experiments with robots "that can't be done on campus," @publicsource reports https://www.publicsource.org/pittsburgh-planning-hazelwood-green-carnegie-mellon-cmu-robotics-hill-district/
"Emergent autonomous scientific research capabilities of large language models"
Very interesting work with LLMs in chemistry.
"We strongly believe that guardrails must be put in place to prevent this type of potential dual-use of large language models. We call for the AI community to engage in prioritizing safety of these powerful models. We call upon OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, Meta, Deepmind, Anthropic, and ..."

I can no longer find it, but someone on one of my many socials asked for pointers to machine learning classes or workshops at #CMU intended for professional development, and at the time I sent some lukewarm possibilities. I just came across the perfect link which evaded my initial search: https://exec.cs.cmu.edu/
Hopefully this reaches the OP, but for the rest of you feel free to use and/or forward at will
@blacklight @DrHyde @tyil The #JargonFile started being passed around and accumulating entries through the 1970s at #Stanford, #MIT, #CarnegieMellon, Bolt Beranek and Newman, and other pre-Internet computing centers. Some terms date back to the late 1950s MIT Tech Model Railroad Club, a very early progenitor of #hacker culture.

Next was a good talk by Aditi Raghunathan on robustness in pre-trained models at #CMU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hw8TzQblCkw (6/11) #AI
Next was a nice talk by @yoavartzi on interaction and natural language learning at the #CMU Language Technologies Institute https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5HI2qY5HXk (5/9) #NLP

Another story about 15-111 at CMU I have is from the EDU-VAX era. Everyone did all their programming in the terminal room on their accounts on the Vax. The TA's had a room in the center of the cluster where they hung out and basically waited for people to come ask questions.
The VAXes were pretty slow (in the video I said they were 11/780s, but they might have been 11/750s.) In any event, there were only 2 or 3 of them, so at any one time maybe 50 students would be timesharing this small number of machines. So they would get slow.
On the wall of the TA's room was a dial that was probably a dimmer switch for the lights, but some enterprising young TA had taped up a handwritten sign above it reading "EDU SPEED". This was of course a joke.
Students would walk into the TA room EVERY DAY getting mad because the machines were so slow and the TA's wouldn't turn the EDU SPEED dial up.
First was a stellar talk by Jesse Dodge on efficiency in #NLP at the #CMU Language Technologies Institute. From algorithmic efficiency to computing model carbon output to problems with text scraping datasets, there's a ton in this talk. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFqm7NnRAe0 (2/10) #sustainability #AI
Next was an important talk by Sasha Luccioni on #AI and #sustainability at the #CMU Language Technologies Institute. Training #LLMs and other large models takes a lot of energy, and Luccioni's work gets into that cost in impressive detail. The model lifecycle assessment, in particular, should absolutely become a standard in #ML. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjaBx3bOAbE (4/6) #MachineLearning
