AP News: "Electricity generated from renewables surpasses coal for first time in US" Energy Information Administration just announced that for 2022 renewables including hydroelectricty exceeded coal-powered generation for the first time. Renewables surpassed nuclear in 2021, which continued in decline last yr. In 2022, wind + solar combined produced 14% of electricity, largely because of burgeoning economic advantage. "Over the past decade, the levelized cost of wind energy declined by 70%, while the levelized cost of solar power has declined by an even more impressive 90%.” As of last yr California produced 26% of national utility-scale solar power [ignoring rooftop solar for no good reason], followed by Texas at 16% + Oklahoma at 8%. Texas flips the tables + is the standout in wind power at 26% followed by Iowa at 10% + Oklahoma at 9%. Too many numbers for you? Let me sum it up by say the renewable energy is now the most affordable source of new electricity in much of the country, not to say the whole world. US coal power was 20% in 2022 but will be down to 17% this year + coal-burners for electricity will be converted to renewables so as to utilize existing transmission.
