Traipsing along, Fiona follows the local foreshore trail while I stop to make a photo.

The unmaintained trail takes you along the sometimes still, sometimes choppy waters of the bay. Follow it far enough eastwards and you end up at our local surfing beach where the water is now 12.7°C.

We were walking the local foreshore foot track that connects Dodges Ferry to Lewisham this afternoon when I made this image looking over the expanse of Pitt Water.

Disused boat shed at Dodges Ferry.

An adjacent and disused boat shed burned down last year. Boat sheds are found on several local beaches on the shore of the bay. This one is located just past the sandstone headland at the eastern end of Okines Beach.

This is a short and easy walk affording extensive views over Frederick Henry Bay and its coastline and, maybe at the right time of year, whales.

Took a walk along the foreshore on sunset last night.

The colours of the end of day tint land and water in colours bright and pastel. The bay is still. A water bird calls.

This is life here on the coast. I hope that yours’ is as colourful.

STORIES OF THE COAST…
Always changing but always the same. I'm borrowing those words from G Wayne Thomas off the Morning of the Earth album because they fit this town I'm writing about. What I mean is that the town is changing but here and there you can pick up the vibe of the place it once was and maybe, here and there, still is.

Is it the same with other towns? I guess so. All it requires to pick up the past in the present is having known the place. And, yes, I did know this little coastal town because my partner worked there I would drive her van to and from it to drop her off and pick her up after work.

Anyway, this is a story about remembering.

China Creek flows into the estuary at Dodges Ferry on the coast of southeast Tasmania.

Low tide reveals extensive sand flats on this shallow side of the estuary through which waters flow into Pitt Water.

Tasmanians are fortunate in having small towns off the main highways where life is slower and quiet.

IN TASMANIA…
It is the last day of January and the sun sets on another warm, late-summer day at Coles Bay on Tasmania’s east coast as it silhouettes the people fossicking on the shoreline.

We look out over Great Oyster Bay towards the Tasmanian coast.

There is something about the Tasmanian coast, here, where the land meets the sea… a purity of landscape combined with a sense of the sea’s wildness. The controlled nature of the land meets the uncontrolled nature of the oceans.

So, this is why Tunnel Bay is called that. Because… there really is a tunnel there.

We were on our way back from a walk to Shipstern Bluff when in a spur of the moment decision we decided to make the side trip to Tunnel Bay. Would it be worth the effort?

The turnoff is signposted and you come across it as you traverse the flatish plateau densely covered in tea tree (Malaleuca, I think) between the sea and the steep escarpment behind. The national parks service has constructed numerous stone steps to the bay and as you descend you realise that you will have to walk up all of them on the way back.

Tunnel Bay is best described as a crescent-shaped rocky beach of large, water-rounded stones. The parks service has constructed a couple seats there in a small clearing above the beach, a good place to take a break and have a snack.

The sea was calm the day we walked in, however, like Shipstern Bluff, I imagine the bay is subject to big waves coming in with the south swell.

Shipsterns and Tunnel Bay make a good day’s walk for those interested in a little exercise and the rugged coast of the Tasman Peninsula.

So, was the side trip to Tunnel Bay worthwhile? Sure was.
