At the airport heading home after a cracking
Web Directions #CodeLeaders22 and #Summit22
It’s been exhausting and brilliant all at once. I even made a new friend today.
Talk: "OKRs are the new Git"
Sten Pittet, Co-founder Tability
• Don't cascade OKRs, instead aim for low-level OKRs to be aligned with intent of higher-level OKRs.
• Make sure there are weekly OKR updates: the more often you check in, the cheaper it is for your initial plan to be wrong (which it almost always is).
• Make trends easy to see for your most important goals: a single red/amber/green doesn't tell the story – are you trending up or down?

Talk: "Remix, Server Components, #NextJS: Navigating the future of #React"
Ben Teese, Principal Software Engineer Shine Solutions
Key takeaways:
• Server-side data loading in many cases will eliminate the need for #GraphQL (to avoid overfetching and requests).
• Need SSR? Use Remix or Next.js. Don't? Probably still use them for their DX and convenient features.
• Remix: simpler, uses the platform. Next.js: SSG (if you need it), server components (beta)

.@webdirections@twitter.com #CodeLeaders22 asked for my thoughts on the State of the Web Platform 🌐. Here’s my obviously subjective and necessarily incomplete summary w/ a cameo of @dalmaer@twitter.com & @bgalbs@twitter.com: https://goo.gle/code-leaders-web-platform (slide notes).

Talk: "The State of Web Performance"
@henrihelvetica, Head of Developer Community, WebPageTest at Catchpoint
Key takeaway:
Average Lighthouse score on the web today: 32. A failing grade. Things need to improve.
Here’s my talk notes from #WebDirections #CodeLeaders22 #Summit22
Good mentors make good managers; a journey from IC to management.
A presentation outlining my career change into management
#webdirections #codeleaders22 #summit22
Talk: "How to grow and scale your engineering organisation"
Chris Modica, Chief Architect - Digital and Application Innovation, Microsoft
Key takeaway:
In the current environment, engineers who feel like they aren't productive quickly (how quick they get a laptop, how long it takes to get GitHub access…) will leave. Focusing on time-to-productivity is a focus on retention.
Talk: "Finding it hard to build and retain a high performing tech team?"
Gretchen Scott, Co-Founder, Tech Diversity Lab
Key takeaway:
Women leave tech at twice the rate of men in Australia, and promoted on average 2-3 years slower. Lots of programmes to get women into tech; much less support for keeping them there!

Talk: "Good mentors make good managers: a journey from IC to management"
Philip Boardman, Engineering Manager, Redbubble
Key takeaway:
There's a big difference between 10 years of experience vs 1 year of experience, ten times. You should be learning, growing, and building upon what you've learned to your next growth opportunity.
Know what you need to learn next. Develop a learning pathway/framework.
Talk: "Managers of managers"
Stefano Fratini, Rokt
Key takeaway:
Effective leader-of-leaders communication:
• Be direct. Talk directly to everyone – not just your direct reports.
• Repeat yourself. As many times as necessary. Until you hear your message being echoed back.
Talk: "The 2000 Year Old Engineering Manager"
David Lewis, Senior Engineering Manager, Compono
Key takeaway:
Most of the stress/anxiety you feel comes from what you believe that people think about you.
Excited to be attending Web Directions #codeleaders22 today. So cool to attend an in-person conference again.
#WebDirections #CodeLeaders22 kicking off here in Sydney! First talk: Stoicism as a leadership skill.
