#Introduction

Hi! I'm Chunshek, a #Hongkonger jack-of-all-trades living in #Taiwan.

As a C2 level speaker in #Cantonese, #Mandarin, and #English, I've come to polyglot.city to connect with like-minded folks who are interested in #languages. I have studied #French, #German, #Italian, and #HKSL; and also dabbled with #Spanish, #Arabic, #Japanese, #Icelandic, #Hungarian, and #Ukrainian.

Most speakers understand and speak multiple dialects, and #codeSwitch (alternate between languages/dialects) in different contexts (and sometimes within a single conversation with another person). (A (near?) universal example: as a teenager, did you speak to your friends the way you spoke to your grandparents? Probably not. You spoke different dialects, understood when to use each, and code switched in the different contexts.)

What does that mean for Hebrew?

finally got around to listening to this episode of Code Switch. the second half with Sarah Gaither from the Duke Identity and Diversity Lab, especially, about not belonging twice over, really spoke to me. it was validating to hear. (i'd be interested in more from her lab)

although, the sign off comments from gene demby were actually kind of hurtful. like i get that there are ways that mixed people enable all kinds of internalised racism, but it's painful and fraught to try to find one's place in a world where you don't even look like your family, and they are the ones to call you & treat you as a foreigner in your own home.

what i've come to find is that mixed people are my people. it almost matters less what the mix is (like, let's be real, colorism and other intersections are still going to be a thing), but that so many of us experience this otherness in common.

@entwininglife @ifilljustice@mastodon.sociaDon't get me started. My father didn't #CodeSwitch, he systematically replaced things that could indicate he was #Jewish with #White versions. He changed his name, crafted his pronunciation to sound #anglo & more. Mind you, he spent a terrible 2 years in Nazi-occupied #Vienna & the #Austrian #government payed him #reparations for murdering his father, so fear drove much of it, but whatever the reason, dancing w/ #Whiteness has some pretty dark consequences.

We're really going to have to start throwing Young's "Should Writers Use They Own English?" :OpenAccess: into some of these #fediverse feeds, aren't we?

People can #CodeSwitch. It's a thing. You aren't owed a toot in your preferred register.

Similarly, someone discussing ideas in a given register doesn't mean that they're elitist.

People can & do operate in different registers / languages / codes. It's one of our many inalienable human rights.
