I don’t bother typing apostrophes because I trust the little creatures in my smartphone to fix it all up. But I have confused them by throwing French into the mix. Who knew that the French have a weird word “dont” with no apostrophe‽ Huh. So now I have to double-check “don’t” in English or risk people thinking that - gasp - I don’t know how to use apostrophes.

@simid @fishidwardrobe @Richard_Littler @actuallyautistic yes, the masking / code switching / emulation is the effort or energy we put in to modify ourselves to align to what we perceive the other person/people wants or accepts. We stop needing to do that — or at least reduce it — when we have understanding and acceptance.

I literally refer to my “filters” now, as I knowingly will filter parts of myself or expressions with others. That’s how I remain mindful.

@fishidwardrobe @Richard_Littler @actuallyautistic I also see #codeswitching used to denote how we adjust to communicate with each other generally, but I tend to think if it more as the overhead of how we modify our own expression. When we get to a point of acceptance and understanding between each other, the need for code switching is reduced. I think of it, from a computer science angle, as emulation versus native processing. Emulation works but it’s more taxing.

And I think that’s the part where it can be confusing, when we need to reconnect with our authentic selves after becoming aware of our differences and begin self-acceptance.

It also strikes me that beyond cultural differences in #codeswitching, we also vary in our #neurodiversity.

@fishidwardrobe @Richard_Littler @actuallyautistic I’m used to understanding #codeswitching as a suppression of one’s cultural identity to fit in, so I think maybe we’re doing something similar. Indeed I can see how being in the closet maps to this as well, and I have likened #masking to that as well, from my experience. For me, it adds stress and cognitive load because you have to expend energy thinking about and modifying your behavior to fit in.

As an immigrant in the US with friends and family worldwide, I am no stranger to code-switching. These switchings happen not only for natural language and lexicon but also for standard units of measurement (read: American exceptionalism of not following the decimal system).

I am also easily fascinated by numerical patterns and couldn’t help but notice this morning that 11 F is equivalent to -11 C! Stay warm if you are in the US!

I used the verb "to chip" like I was sat in a cheap pub in Bradford at 2am and not in an office environment a city over with people who have only known me for six months.

The words "dunno wut yu're doin but we're chippin'" (complete with glottal stop) came out of my mouth followed closely by "oh shit, this is Leeds, right. Translate- er... We're leaving, are you coming?"

I recently talked to a black woman who was my RN. We talked a lot about #codeswitching and how it affects her life. It's awful that she has to do that just to fit in at work and in society. Then I realized as a member of the #LGBTQIA community that I do it too, I even do it around my family. I act differently around coworkers, family, and strangers than I do with my inner group of friends just to feel safe. not that my experience is even comparable to her's, but no one should have to do it.

@ElenLeFoll I really can't wait for the day when #ASR can handle even quasi-#codeswitching. I wanna be able to tell my phone in French to play music by an artist with an English name!
