Looks like the BIG 3 are doing their best roping in developers in order to promote their cloud services. This new Google IDX is 100% in the cloud which has its advantages but it will probably also lock you into the GCloud :)

Anyway it will be an interesting year for developers.

I am giving AWS #CodeWhisperer a spin on a real world project. It's like a very keen, very fast, very vocal, and very inexperienced junior dev “helping” you. That is to say, great for outsourcing repetitive grunt work, not so great for anything which requires a modicum of thought, and you'd better check the code they hand over thrice before you accept it! It's still very useful for some mind-bogglingly boring tasks e.g. writing an HTTP code to standard HTTP/1.1 header message function.

Amazon #CodeCatalyst is now out. I haven't had a chance to play with it yet, but it looks like a great way to start an app in the cloud and it includes #CodeWhisperer, their AI co-programming tool in the vein of #CoPilot

@joelnet by the way CodeWhisperer does similar.

I dont ask it to write whole functions, but it does smart code completion for me, and it is rather good at string based message completion just like this one.

Now that #googlebard announced #copilotx and #codewhisperer's features of debugging and explaining code it makes me wonder how much more data Google would have had if they hadn't shut down Google Code in 2015. The lackluster adoption could have been fixed with DevRel.

Playing around with AWS CodeWhisperper in my Cloud9 IDE. It actually got me over a hump!

I've been stuck parsing the contents of a multipart/form-data request for an API written in Python for MONTHS! It suggested some mostly-correct logic and put me on the path to figuring out the problem.

For a first real-world encounter with an AI, I'm pretty pleased! This is not typical of me, enjoying the future when it arrives.

There are quite a few code-generating “AI” systems now — GitHub #CoPilot, Amazon #CodeWhisperer, BigCode #SantaCoder, Facebook #Incoder, maybe even more.

I wonder how hard it would be to get these BS bots to play #TDD ping-pong… I write a test, then they generate code until all tests pass, then i refactor, then we repeat.
