Cool study on published today in Science:
doi.org/10.1126/science.adg072

They put many species pairs to coexist together. In most cases one species outcompeted the other

Yet all these species are actually coexisting in real communities: coexistence is an emergent phenomenon

...aaand it's online!!! 🥂

Competitive hierarchies in diverse ecological communities have long been thought to lead to and prevent . However, in our latest paper we show that competitive hierarchies in fact mitigate instability by keeping short and long loops relatively weak. A bit of a brain twister, I know, but such a cool story. I'm beyond proud of Franziska Koch, PhD student in my team, for pushing this one out the door!

I woke up at exactly the right time to stumble into the bathroom and watch the in the meadow! I love her; she’s such a good canine neighbor.
She’s got a spot in the far corner of the meadow where she likes to sunbathe. She’d just come out of the coyote corner and she was trotting up the verge, hunting. She got to one patch of taller grass and ferns, paused, and did the magical little pounce - but no luck. A little further along, and she was at the Egg Spot, where there was a pleasant surprise waiting for her. Eggs!
Keeping chickens has inevitable waste eggs, the ones that are cracked or duds or just questionable. I started out putting them in the compost pile, but the coyote dug them straight out to eat them and I decided to skip the middleman. Now I leave bad eggs at the head of a little game trail, and she gobbles them down when she passes through.
After she neatly cracked and slurped all the eggs, she headed up to the big compost pile by the paddock, carefully watching inside the paddock the whole time. (The equines were out of sight at the other corner of the paddock, staring daggers at the front door because dawn is at 4 am and it was already 6.) She ghosted under a tree, then carefully checked out the extra fencing I put around the chicken-greenhouse. Then it was on to the corn terraces, for a long look back downhill across the meadow, and time to move on. She stopped and marked her territory on her way back to the Egg Spot, and then she vanished into the underbrush without a rustle.
Such a cool creature. A scourge on the rabbit population, and a strong deterrent to other predators. Doesn’t test my fences! Only kills chickens who wander into the meadow (we call it the Nugget Zone), and only kills them to eat them. Truly an honor to share this land with her.

Elephants in India make complex decisions based on their social and ecological context, a new study reveals. The study shows that elephants can weigh the risks and benefits of different actions, such as crossing a road or raiding a crop field. The study could help improve human-elephant coexistence and conservation.

By now, humanity should have learned the lessons of the terrible periods of religious conflict in past centuries. It is vital to take all necessary steps to prevent religious extremism and violence. Whatever our religious beliefs, it is essential that all people live together in harmony.

New paper with Gaël Bardon on through stage structure at link.springer.com/article/10.1 link arxiv.org/abs/2110.00315 We show that opposite competitive hierarchies on different vital rates can promote coexistence, for multiple cycles. This was previously known to be possible with adults and juveniles spatially separated, we show that it is equally possible when juveniles feel adult (which is quite common...). 1/3
