Living near a lead mine in childhood is linked to greater cognitive decline in old age – those exposed as children had steeper declines in memory/attention and worse language/executive function.

I'm looking for review papers on the general topic of memory for pictures. I've found some pre 1990s, but haven't found review papers after that...(except Madigan, 2014). Any picture folks know of some?

The @ManyDogs paper on point-following is now available: animalbehaviorandcognition.org

πŸ• 455 dogs, 20 research sites

πŸ“ Object choice task with
(1) Ostensive condition (pointing after making eye-contact and saying dog's name)
2) Non-ostensive condition

πŸ“Š Point-following in both conditions was above chance, but there was no condition difference

πŸ“Š Dogs followed contralateral, momentary pointing at lower rates than has been previously reported

Can or a make up for ?
Lack of harms and , but easy remedies can't fix everything. While caffeine may help you stay awake and feel more alert, it won’t help you with tasks that require complex thought. And while a short nap may make you feel better on nights that you need to stay awake, it probably won’t help your performance. In short, sufficient sleep is essential to your mind and brain, and no substitute for sleep.

@krishnadeltoso @philosophy @startupnews @cogsci Sounds interesting! I learnt a lot from philosophical entries like Animal Cognition and Animal Consciousness,

Maybe AI could help us to avoid excessive anthropomorphic bias in our attempts to learn what there is? After all, it just could be creative, couldn't it,

Your reality is never what you think. Our perception of the world is shaped by our expectations, beliefs, and emotions, not by objective facts. We can change our reality by changing our mindset and we should be more open-minded and curious about other perspectives.

Neuroscientists successfully test theory that forgetting is actually a form of learning medicalxpress.com/news/2023-08

Adaptive expression of engrams by retroactive interference cell.com/cell-reports/fulltext

Highlights
β€’ Retroactive interference causes forgetting by the competition of two memory engrams
β€’ Forgotten engrams can be expressed or updated by reexposure to training cues
β€’ Artificial reactivation of engram cells rescues interference-induced forgetting
β€’ Interference is an active process that requires the activation of the suppressed engram

these findings indicate that retroactive interference modules engram expression in a manner that is both reversible and updatable. Inference may constitute a form of adaptive forgetting where, in everyday life, new perceptual and environmental inputs modulate the natural forgetting process.

Partnered mothers who were mainly unpaid caregivers or who did other unpaid activities had lower cognitive scores in later life than full-time working mothers. Partnered mothers who mainly worked part-time had the best cognitive function in later life, slightly higher than mothers who worked full-time.
