@simondlr Argh! I wish programmers did not pretend that they know about names — it's a source of frustration, to be sure

Using fashionable, ready-to-use black-box tools (or, equivalently, trending methods "inspired" by published works one hasn't really understand), it is far too easy to incur , which implies modelling not only the "signal" being studied in these few data but also (or mostly) their useless noise.

The real harm is that other researchers may be led to believe that these self-deceiving shortcuts may have a real chance of actually working.

My question is how far Trump and those like him are able to do this by instinct and how far they consciously learn it. Anyone got further info

This graph illustrates the perception of violence in the US by political party. I added the lines indicating President. Notice the party in power is likely to believe the US is safer than the party not in power.

For those arguing, the difference between the and is a difference in degrees I ask, in which situation were people injured, did anybody die, was there extensive property damage, was the national guard called out? Those are a lot of degrees.

Want to do something this year to challenge people's preconceptions and raise awareness about cognitive biases?

Give people cake.

More specifically, find somewhere like a county fair to setup a similar demonstration as this Brain Games episode.

I have a theory that the few minutes after you reveal that they were the same cakes would be prime time to present other info that people may normally biased against learning. Gender?

Why this is not marginal? Again, some very human might act partly unnoticed

@petersuber notes a recent work:

fediscience.org/@petersuber/11

"It seems that the respondents assessed cited papers worse when they observed rather low paper impact values in the survey" [5] I.e. highly cited works seem to be considered more trustworthy

This may be an issue if controversial literature keeps getting cited, but the reason why it's controversial pass unnoticed [6]. More scrutiny might help

is not perfect but its distinctive self-correction ability is key, and it's not automatic. It's a process to foster, not an intrinsic property (as we all are subject to , believing that we'll fix this in science, once and for all, is quite an obvious paradox - hint: "believing").

Research once honestly believed good may be revisioned later. However, sometimes a thesis/paradigm/school fights to survive beyond good faith, "against"
