Next was a fabulous discussion with Josh Tenenbaum on #AI, #CognitiveScience, and so much more at MIT Brain and Cognitive Sciences. Tenenbaum is always a must watch, and this is no exception https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTbPgkt9oMA (4/9)
Yes, I have started making #cognitivescience #philosophy memes, including this one for #phenomenology, after much encouragement from others.

🧠 I released v0.12 of my gactar tool for creating & running basic ACT-R models on multiple implementations using a single declarative file format.
ACT-R (Adaptive Control of Thought — Rational) is both a theory of cognition and an implementation of that theory in software.
This release fixes issues, adds some capabilities to the language, & adds some new command-line tools.

#Saturday #book #treasurehunting continues. Big scores at @harvardbooks once again. Someone dropped off a lot of good #philosophyofscience texts. #karlpopper in particular looks great for some of my projects.

“Research reveals symbols are more memorable than words. This novel study dives into our brain’s knack for recalling graphic symbols and logos over their word counterparts. Symbols, offering visual anchors for abstract ideas, outperform words in memory tests. This understanding could revolutionize visual communication and design.”

And that's that for Horton (2020)!
Okay. Lots to think about in there. Some examples of frustrating postmodern wordiness, but enough insight and more clearly worked through ideas about scale to be well worth the read.
There has been at least one other major publication on scale in the past few years (DiCaglio) to figure out. But finding a way to think clearly on #scale is *vital* for #CognitiveScience, which is, to be honest, a mess on this front.
Sometimes I feel that focusing on anything but climate change and the environment makes me effectively into the "this is fine" dog. Thinking about thinking can definitely help though, because it relates to how we can change and adapt.
Does anybody have any ideas on how #Neuroscience, #Psychology, and #cognitiveScience can relate to studying #climateChange ?
Belief change dynamics are really central imo, as is reinforcement learning. Using fossil fuels is really immediately rewarding (especially if you're like, an oil baron) and the abstract future reward of "going green" is often too distant for people. There's also community and cultural information flows, and other learning dynamics like imprinting and observational learning+mimicry.
Any other ideas?

I couldn't agree more! It's not that #Idontlike Douglas #Hofstadter's Gödel Escher Bach: there are some brilliant ideas in it. But I don't get all the fuzz around this book. It aims very high: showing recursion as an unifying pattern of maths, #CognitiveScience and art, in a recursive manner... But the result is quite verbose, with a lot of hand-waving. Honestly, I prefer a book like "Metamagical themas", where Hofstadter shares his reflections on these topics without trying to add stylistic effects.

"Two sages were standing on a bridge over a stream. One said to the other, 'I wish I were a fish. They are so happy.' The other replied, 'How do you know whether fish are happy or not? You're not a fish.' The first said, 'But you're not me, so how do you know whether or not I know how fish feel?'
