They highlight the big profits the businesses have made in the past year, the high wages of executives, the affordability of food,
and the issue of food wastage.

One message labelled as a 'special' with a Woolworths logo on it reads: "We understand that times are tough, and that’s why we pay our CEO over $20,000 a day.""

One half of Australia's supermarket duopoly, #Coles reported their profits rose by considerably more than their modest increase in sales volume and despite rapidly rising shoplifting amidst a #CostOfLiving squeeze. This is strongly suggestive of corporate #profiteering - confirming other studies that have revealed the duopoly's willingness to exploit an inflationary period by jacking up prices beyond the implications of any supply disruptions.

Yet the #InvisibleHandOfTheMarket * in its infinite and ineffable wisdom gave the Coles share price a spanking at this news, apparently for not profiteering hard enough.

*as always, wherever you see/hear the phrase #TheMarket it is necessary to translate this into "the desires and priorities of very wealthy people", who own the vast majority of corporate shares.

So anyway, #Coles brand tasty #cheese was $9.00 for a 1kg block in 2019 (I know this, because I was experimenting with creating smoked cheese for my people, and I purchased it often). The same Coles brand tasty cheese is now $14.00, despite the "PRICE LOCKED" tag that's been there the whole time.

Temporary price rises due to #COVID lockdowns and the like are to be expected in a market-based economy: shortages make sense when nobody can go to work farming/making/processing/delivering cheese.

However, COVID isn't a thing anymore, according to Western governments and Western "news services".

If COVID is no longer a thing, cheese prices *should* return to 2019 levels (give or take a bit to account for #inflation, #ClimateCatastrophe, #MarketForces, and the like). Yet, cheese prices continue to skyrocket.

Please excuse my economic illiteracy here, but if a previous crisis is no longer a crisis, your pricing should stabilise, so that your customers don't have to choose between medication and food.

Dear Woolies, Coles, Bunnings warehouse, Kmart etc and all other stores that have self checkout — and now Aldi. You are almost exclusively self-checkout now.
The last time I was at Bunnings, the lady checking receipts at the exit was stopping everyone.
I didn't choose to participate in that nonsense, so I just skipped the exit line and left.
I heard her saying "umm - Excuse me “ as I kept walking and raised the receipt above my head, leaving the store.
You can either trust me to do self-checkout, or you can put your cashiers back in place like it used to be.
• I'm not interested in proving that I did your job for you.
• If you want me to be a cashier with no training then that's your problem not mine.
• Keep employing young people and give them job opportunities.
