Back from #CollabW23 and *really* impressed by the Climate Aware Task Scheduler: https://github.com/GreenScheduler/cats
Reduce your simulations' carbon footprints by 75% with ease!
Well, my toot rate was basically nonexistent for #SSI #CollabW23 , but with good reason that it was so engaging and I hardly checked my phone. Perhaps I'll make a proper recap at some point, but I want to make one call out: I'm super proud of my #HackDay team that took the concept of #RSEng Skill Development Pathways and produced a proof of concept for what that resource might look like. You can find the website here https://rsetoolkit.github.io/training/ (rough around the edges) and GitHub repo here https://github.com/RSEToolkit/training . We are really keen to see this take off and know that it will need input from the community to keep it going. Please get in touch if you are interested. @researchsoftware

So that's a wrap! As usual an intense couple of days for #CollabW23, thanks to all the organizers at the Software Sustainability Institute, volunteers & funders.
Special thanks to conference chair Rachael Ainsworth, pictured below.
Now we prepare for the hack day tomorrow!
Congrats @saranjeet for being part of the team that won 1st place for their Collaborative Idea at #CollabW23 #RSEng
Now onto the second Lightning Talks session at #CollabW23 where @ellakaye is promoting our video demo: "How to Make a Contribution to Base R" https://youtu.be/VOlF8fPf9v8.
In less than 10 minutes we go through
- How to find a good first issue
- Getting to the root of the issue (demonstrated with a past bug)
- How to propose a fix
Plus, how to find out more!
Collaborative Ideas will be shared after the event, meanwhile you can look at the bank of ideas from previous years: https://softwaresaved.github.io/CW-ideas/ (This website was originally a Hack Day project I was part of at Collaborations Workshop in 2021) #CollabW23
Took a break from #CollabW23 this morning but I'm back in time to read the outputs from the Collaborative Ideas Session and put my votes in. Thankfully we just have to pick our top 3 and don't have to give a ranking - that would have been tough!
Slightly embarrassed to report that it took the #CollabW23 drinks reception in a fossil gallery for me to learn what a mastodon is... 😳
Enjoyed the #CollabW23 Discussion session, where our small group joined up with a couple of others (in-person and online) focusing on topics related to community and collaboration.
In this speed-blogging session, we drafted a post on building healthy communities: hope to share later when it is tidied up and published!
You know you're at #CollabW23 when Google tells you there might be issues with the doc "due to heavy collaborator use of this document." and the internet in the location obviously struggling with so many devices being connected.
Day 1 of #CollabW23 by the #SSI is now kicking off! Loving the small tech area stickers for the name badges 😁 Looking forward to three days of intense but super fun discussions and activities around #ResearchSoftware and #RSEng

You can watch the keynote panel from #CollabW23 where four people gave thoughtful overviews of their career paths in research software #RSEng.
As strong theme of working things out as you go along, with the help of mentors.
Many folks from The Turing Way team (and our allies from the Turing REG team, The Alan Turing Institute and many others!) are at Collaborations Workshop (#CollabW23) in Manchester, UK this week! 💪
For those that don’t know the Software Sustainability Institute's Collaborations Workshop, this annual conference was where the role “Research Software Engineer” was first developed. You can read more about this history here: https://www.software.ac.uk/blog/2016-08-17-not-so-brief-history-research-software-engineers
I'm attending #CollabW23 remotely this week.
It's the 15th Collaborations Workshop and the first hybrid one (~110 in person, 70 online).
I will be presenting the work of The Turing Way (@turingway) translation and localisation team today at #CollabW23
Translation work is care work. It is key to knowledge democratisation and community building 🙂
#collabw23 SSI CW2023 has starred and I'm still trying trip recover from my trip to Argentina
#CollabW23 has started! We kicked off with a hybrid breakfast social. Excited to be back at my favourite conference and see how we can make this work in hyrbid!
