With corporate media often being outright hostile to labor organizing, and two capitalist parties that regularly side with the bosses, it’s probably not hard for people to feel like the fight is simply too big to take on. It creates a sort of Prisoner’s Dilemma, in which workers have trouble knowing if it’s safer to stand together and fight, or keep their heads down and just try to survive as best they can. Climate Justice Alliance has announced that there’s a call for local protests from February 19th -26th in solidarity with the effort to defend the forest. Further, organizers are planning a mass convergence on Atlanta from March 4th-11th, for all who are able to go.

This wasn’t a strike for better pay, or a strike for safer conditions, or better health insurance, it was a strike to get an election in which they can vote on whether or not to form a union.

Again – simply forming a union required coordinated labor action, and permission from the company.Biden recently tweeted that workers have a right to form a union, but do they?

REI workers had to strike just to get the right to vote on whether to form a union.

I’m glad that REI outlets are unionizing, and I hope the trend continues, but I think this is a good reminder that even as we celebrate the progress we make, we have to be thinking about the next fight.

It sometimes bugs me that I keep coming back to the need for political change, but at the end of the day, most of the big problems in the world lead back to our political and economic status quo. The workers have decided to #strike for three days all across the country in response, and have asked people to actively not buy #Starbucks gift cards. Don’t go to Starbucks this weekend, and don’t buy their gift cards. The ruling class has shown that they’ll let the world burn, as long as they get to rule the ashes, which means that we need to build #collectivepower to make the changes we need. This is one part of that effort, so stand in #solidarity.

I write often about how ecosystem health is key to our survival, and we’re still very much in a system that doesn’t even see it as a factor to consider.

The only time there’s a delay on it is if there’s a protected species there (which became protected because of political activism), or there are people there, standing in the way.
