This is appalling! The international commission on zoological nomenclature puts out a statement to clarify that the goal of nomenclature is to be practical, not ethical.
They seem particularly obsessed with stability, things should not change because... they should stay the way they are? #Racist, #sexist or #colonialist names are OK as long as they are stable.

Pongids continuously throughout the niches south of this region, and yet the framing of "modern humans" arriving out-of-Africa recently replacing more 'primitive' members of the hominid family still reigns, particularly in genetics. A lot of #colonialist projection still to get over in academia. Although well studied as a discipline we are yet to frame late hominin research around papionin evolution across Africa.

Currently, #Indigenous people's are protecting the vast majority of biodiversity on their lands globally. At the moment in Canada many Indigenous Nations are currently fighting to protect their lands, their lifeways, their sovereignty. Others are specifically pursuing #LandBack. #colonialist settlers are blind to the issues. #Wetsuweten

Past the point of #PlanetaryBoundaries we need to accept the limitations of this approach and revisit the expansive, complex, reciprocal approach that had allowed humanity to flourish within the greater non-human community before enclosure induced scarcity. #LandBack
