The idea that 'we' are not fundamentally #colonialists or #imperialists was at the heart of British historians' talk of 'Empire' in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. #Imperialism was an 'accidental product' and 'lacked rationality and purpose'. Isn't this very similar to the views of American analysts? History, for them, was full of incidents of reluctance, not a strategy. But, when other countries did it, then it was premeditated, designed, and organized.
