These papers from the early 2000s are full of retro vibes.

"So we tried using neural networks but with 10 neurons we didn't get very far so they were abandoned"

Then they proceed to describe how they hand-tuned optimization processes to generate Ebner/Fairchild IPT using a custom UI on an old Unix-y system - and that was actually fairly interesting.

Especially amongst #Fuji folks there is this tendency to brag about shooting #JPG instead of #RAW. Another one of those fun #ColorScience moments: had to combine footage from a #DJI drone with footage shot on a #Sony Venice.

I have a bit of an impostor syndrome there: I actually have no idea how to multiply a matrix. I can't even use online calculators because some need vectors in rows and some in columns and I have no idea what Nuke is using.

So I'm stuck with hoping someone already solved my problem. Turns out, the #Python module "colour-science" has you covered in terms of gamut 🧵

What kind of color hacks am I glossing over here?
Well, on my first project as a comp lead I sat in a DI session with Nuke on my laptop and eyeballed the gamma correction I needed to bake in on top of the ARRI LUT to make the image on my PC look like the one on the big screen. 😅

It was 0.7 by the way.

Color in VFX is such a vast area of research and expertise that it took me more than a dozen projects and several years to (I hope) have a good working knowledge of #colorscience. But reading the ACES forum for just a bit makes me realise I know nothing.

You can, fortunately, start small. I think my first step to workflow bliss was to unify a project's show LUT between #Houdini and #Nuke by patching the nuke-default #ocio config to include Alexa's rec709 LUT and use it for both DCCs.
