There’s a new #colorspace in town.
(found via #inkscape‘s release notes - don’t know how much relevance for vfx it might achieve. Maybe as an internal way of rendering smooth color ramps.)
I've had one foot stuck in this #DCI-P3 #ColorSpace rabbit hole for days. Found a simple test page for browser support: https://www.wide-gamut.com/test
But even in iOS Safari it did not show #P3 support... Last night I found out why - my #DarkReader extension blocked it. Disable DarkReader and the differences from #sRGB are obvious. (Safari's native Reader Mode allows P3, but it breaks a bit of the page content.) Other iOS browsers also support P3. No Windows or Linux browsers I tried can.

A hot topic during most workshops
What colorspace to use and what is a profile ?
In this video i explain how to get a calibrated workflow from camera to monitor and how to setup Lightroom/photoshop

Found this amazing demo of Wide Color Gamut support in Safari. It is amazingly good on iPhone/iPads that support it. You have to try it: https://webkit.org/blog-files/color-gamut/ #graphics #colorspace #gamut
#Darktable - parametric masking
#TILT - Things I Learned Today
Almost all DT modules can have a #parametricMask that limits the area of the image that will be effected by the module. The parameter is a #dataChannel in the chosen #colorSpace.
choose a channel and hover the cursor over the value slider then press "c".
This will switch the display to show just the chosen data channel. The goal is to find the channel that best isolates the elements you want the module to change.

My monitor can apparently do P3.
I set it to that color space and managed to make it look pretty decent with some help from Windows native color calibration (I needed to pull down some greens), but upon switching computers, the MacOS calibration only allowed me to move along one axis (from warm/yellow to cool/purple - the tint I think?) to adjust the white point - and it never really helped me lose the greening.
Back to "Standard" settings then!

Check out this awesome project for a new colour appearance model called ZCAM! It's a high dynamic range uniform colour space that's great for image processing and has a computable inverse, making it suitable for conversions between practical colour spaces like sRGB. There's even a handy npm module available: https://github.com/testbit/zcam-js #colorspace #imageprocessing #javascript #ZCAM

Daughter is playing Color Space on the Oculus 2. It's a lovely game - well, app? - it's relaxing and pretty.
It was cheap too, £8? Great value for the amount she's played it so far.
Probably because they spelt colour wrong 😜

#OKLab is currently the best (I believe, with #LAB being the older and maybe second-best place to operate in) #ColorSpace in which to make all of these transitions & color ramps.
Here are two useful sites, which can hopefully get you headed in the right direction:
Hi Mastodon! Day 1 of #movember for me.

@jz I'm no expert, but AFAIK it depends on where you want to put that color. The #sRGB #ColorSpace is standardized and widely supported by monitors (though some may not actually meet that standard, or need to be color calibrated). The percentages' accuracy may overflow the accuracy of the widely supported #TrueColor #ColorDepth (8-bit/channel) but that accuracy overflows the human eye's anyway. Whose perception depends on the #AmbientLighting on top of that. But again, I'm no expert.

@jz beware that using #RGB is not enough to specify a color:
> A "#ColorModel" is an abstract mathematical model describing the way #colors can be represented as tuples of numbers (e.g. triples in #RGB or quadruples in #CMYK); however, a #ColorModel with no associated #MappingFunction to an absolute #ColorSpace is a more or less arbitrary color system with no connection to any globally understood system of color interpretation.

Working on some video stuff.
#ColorSpace #ColourSpace #hell with #ffmpeg as usual.
Encoding sRGB data in PPM files to yuv420p x264 mkv with ffmpeg and back to PNG looks ok. There is no colour space information recorded in the mkv afaict, so maybe other decoders will guess at different colours...
Encoding REC.709 YUV raw data to yuv240p/bt709 mkv with x264 command line, specifying which colour matrices and transfer functions etc to use, ffmpeg decodes it to something with bad/shifted colours (too dark). This is probably to do with transfer functions; either from bt709 to linear YUV, or from linear RGB to sRGB, or both (probably both).
MPlayer output to PNG on Debian Buster is broken somehow at the moment so I can't test if decoding is the issue, haven't figured out how to get (C)VLC to output to image files either. MPV uses ffmpeg internally so that's no good for testing, even though it works with `--vo image`.

Today I did further work on my color studies.
In b/w pictures, yellow has always a higher brightness than other colors.
Here you can see the relative brightness per color according its luminosity.
This becomes important if you start a painting with a grisaille under-paint.
(according Luminosity ITU-R BT.601 for full saturated colors)

tomorrow I will do only drawing and painting
