Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane

Given how great this album is, it almost seems like it wasn't going to get released. It was recorded in 1957, but wasn't released until 1961, after Coltrane formed his own group.

All Monk compositions, and what seem (in my ignorance) to be early "sheets of sound" runs on Trinkle Trinkle by both Monk and Coltrane.

The remaster sounds great to my ear, given an excellent pressing, flat and quiet.

That era where #music was learning to use #stereo and they just put half the instruments in one ear and the other half in the other.

Fucking awful. I turn my setup to #mono whenever I listen to #coltrane especially if I'm using earbuds.

don’t skip straight to this track but play the full album. when you get to the psalm be sure to give it your full attention to cleanse your soul

This recording, made on a single mic hanging from the ceiling during a run of shows at the Village Gate, was unearthed from the New York Public Library recently, and it's really interesting to hear this particular band working out their direction.

Nice package, enlightening liner notes, lucky to have it.
