Musical Interlude: The late, great Combustible Edison was part of the resurgence of cocktail music in the 90s. They recorded 3 delightfully different albums before going their separate ways. This cover of an old favorite has a certain film noir edge that I like.

"Cry Me a River," performed by Combustible Edison.

My first is this random number by
It's the theme song from a random (excellent) film called Four Rooms. Each room in a hotel on New Year's Eve has a different story (writer & director). All tied together by bell hop Tim Roth. It's silly. That's why I like it.

I'm still grateful for the mid-90s lounge revival all these years later.

Nobody did it better than Combustible Edison. youtube.com/watch?v=d63QxEdJHS

The way mainstream music evolved after the 50s-60s, I'm not sure there's really a comparable sort of "rock and roll was happening but there was also this weird parallel universe of super whitebread exotica that you probably got glimpses of in your parents' record collection" zeitgeist that millenials or zoomers could latch onto.

(Chuck Mangione/Spiro Gyra revival, maybe?)

Incidentally, in the fall of 1994 my dorm floor had a lounge theme party and we made the Combustible Edison cocktail recipe on the back of their debut CD, flaming brandy and all. I remember finding it rather vile at the time, but in hindsight my palate for alcohol hadn't evolved much past "spike super sweet shit with alcohol" and I'm sure we used the absolute cheapest brandy we could get our hands on, because Campari was relatively pricey. I should try one again sometime.

----------------------------------------
The Combustible Edison Cocktail*:
2oz Brandy
1oz Campari
1oz Fresh Lemon Juice

In a shaker full of cracked ice, combine Campari and lemon juice. Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Heat brandy in a chafing dish. When warm, ignite and pour in a flaming stream into the cocktail glass. Vive le Cocktail Revolution!

*If the brandy is chilled and shaken rather than ignited, the drink is known as "The Edisonian"
