The Marvel Comics apps for iOS and Android is shutting down June 2. Comics you've purchased will be accessible in the Marvel Unlimited app without an MU subscription, but iOS users will need to link the Marvel app to a Marvel account before June 2. https://www.marvel.com/articles/comics/marvel-comics-app-purchases-moving-to-marvel-unlimited

"This is what #ComiXology co-founder David Steinberger, and former ComiXology PR guy Chip Mosher were plotting with creators at Thought Bubble last year. They were signing people up for #DSTLRY (pronounced "distillery"), a new creator-owned #comic book publisher and distributor. Consider it the digital Image Comics of the 21st century, with Steinberger and Mosher as founders of the company. But they are not alone."
Looks like it might be pretty cool.

There's a scramble in the comics industry to replace ComiXology, and am 100% rooting for everyone. But really, the best digital comics service out there right now is Hoopla Digital.
It's supported by virtually every publisher, and if your library is on board, it's 100% free.

One reason (if you need another one) to not buy from #Amazon and certainly not to buy goods that aren't tangible and material, after not using it for a while, I just tried to log in to #Comixology and the hundreds of digital comics I'd purchased. Bezos has decided on some dreadful and ultimately failed attempt to merge everything with Amazon/Kindle and not one of my purchases are there. Gone. The man is a crook.

Amazon continuing to show their attention to detail when it comes to selling digital comics.
This is the second time they've listed a "Dark Hose" sale this month.
"Building the next Comixology isn't going to be easy"
This is annoyingly direct market-centric, ignoring the broader range of comics, and (less surprising) no mention of libraries, but it's still an interesting take on what's involved in bringing a digital comics service to market these days, and why a direct comiXology replacement is unlikely.
What it misses is maybe a direct #comiXology replacement isn't what the market wants or needs in 2023?

@dtgeek Don't forget about the patent protection Comixology/Amazon also enjoys when it comes to creating readable views of comic content on small screens (Guided View).
I ran into this when I started looking at incorporating issue previews into @freshcomics back before Amazon purchased them. There may be ways to work around those patents, but it may be expensive legally, should Amazon want to make your life miserable.

Latest 4 #comics I’ve read. The first 3 are #comixology Unlimited offerings. There’s a lot about #Ultra I liked. I loved Lee Garbett’s art on #Skyward (look at that hair!), but the overall story didn’t grab me. Ugh, and #Fables v16 was a waste of time: “name a comic that builds up a confrontation and deus ex machina’s itself out of it” - no thank you. #Air was lovely.

Wednesday means #NewComicBookDay ... Unfortunately I'm going to have to cut back on my purchases of physical books. Running out of storage for them. Going to have to read more digitally #MarvelUnlimited #DCUniverseUltra #Comixology

Changing the topic entirely! It has been exactly one year since the old #Comixology app on my tablet updated and was rendering virtually worthless by Amazon. The end of an era, although it has done my credit card bill some good.
Nice to see some new companies popping-up to fill the void being left by #Amazon's changes to #Comixology.

#Comics people, question
Are you still buying stuff at #Comixology? I'm a little concerned about the future of the platform and what is going to happen to it.
And I don't think we do have any other platforms as good as Comixology, right?
Speculation about anything Amazon does has always been a sucker's game, but Todd Allen offers some useful history and context while speculating about what's really happening with #comixology.
He paints a plausible picture without going too far out on any limbs, and I think he nails the underlying reason: comics aren't audiobooks, and comiXology was never going to be Audible. Some of that is Amazon's own fault, of course, but accountability rolls downhill.

This is a great piece asking questions about the frighteningly uncertain future of the Internet's major digital #comics shop, #ComiXology: https://www.comicsbeat.com/comixology-update-strange-doings-at-amazon/
As someone who has been digital-only for new and ongoing titles for over the past decade, I'm concerned about what will happen with the accessibility of my vast library and subscriptions. I do NOT want to go back to print subs for reasons.
This whole folding of #Comixology as "just another name for #Kindle features" is missing a UX that makes sense to anyone who has ever had a box at a local comic book shop.
One (more) thing that annoys me about how #Comixology subscriptions were folded into #Kindle - the worse-than-useless "Your pre-order has been confirmed" emails.
