Was watching a YouTube video with my kids. An add came on for teeth whitening products. They showed yellow teeth beside white teeth and made the case that white teeth are better.

I took a moment to talk with them about what they saw. I felt it important to teach them that judging someone by their appearance is never acceptable.

How much advertising is just low key selling of judgement and making people feel bad about their appearance? Not healthy.

When we worked on #ARPANet in the 1970s the audience was limited and the rules were basically simple and enforceable. The focus was on the technology, not on the culture and management issues. I was probably one of the few social scientists on the system in 1970 and we weren't having to worry about bad actors on #ARPANet but our buildings were under threat by bombmakers similar to what happened at U of Wisconsin.
We almost certainly underestimated the potential of bad actors.

At the end of the day, none of the #artists and other #vendors on a system like #Mastodon are, for example, paying extra to get their wares in front of you. In fact, all they're doing is posting, and you're following. Unless they're being deceptive in #tagging, what is the issue? Don't #follow artists I guess if you don't like it.

It's really not the same thing as, say, calling you about your car's #extended #warranty.
