Genetically, it may be a rewarding evolutionary strategy for males to court multiple bird bachelorettes + spread their genes to as many offspring as feasible. A longer migration distance also increases the possibility that birds might have difficulty finding their true loves once they arrive at their breeding grounds. If they fail, then many birds will resort to seeking out a rebound relationship instead. In the photo is a mated pair of Grey Herons (Ardea cinerea), a wading bird of the heron family Ardeidae, native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa.
