Does anyone on the keep a Commonplace Book?

If so, any tips you can offer for someone just starting out?

I've just discovered the research notebook app/digital commonplace book Orson, which looks very interesting.

What particularly caught my attention is how its structure maps precisely onto the pattern @gordon has identified as "capture, organise, synthesise"

Orson has cards to capture information, contexts (e.g. maps, timelines, etc) to organise, and pages to write narratives, embedding cards or contexts as necessary.

While browsing the federated timeline, I came across mention of and have decided to give it a try.

I gave up on OneNote some years back, switching to text documents and handful of tracking spreadsheets sorted into various directories along with handwritten for different subjects and a .

I'm always experimenting to find a balance between the handwritten, where I feel the most engaged, and the electronic, with its access to search and sorting features and its speed.

I'm enjoying starting to build out links in Obsidian and use tags, though I suspect my folder/subfolder structure will take a bit of experimentation: my approach to categorization isn't exactly Aristotelian.

Loved this poem even before I knew it referred to a de Chirico painting. It's just so funny, among other things.

Hypothetically, if one were to harbor ambitions of becoming a prolific writer of absurdisms, short stories, screenplays, poems, travelogues, and maybe novels, someday, what are the best tools to support such an endeavor and what's the best self-hosting storage solutions?

This poem hooks me with its opening:

"This happens in Schubert
And elsewhere,

Iowa, for example."

I mean, how can you not love that!

Such a well-known poem . . . but I always find it moving. It is, after all, "About suffering" and "its human position."

Can't quite articulate why this poem grabbed me ... though I often find Stallings's poems do that.

My mom has a strong daily habit of recording in her daily / / . My sister sent her a bunch of stuff for her recent birthday, and this is mom’s entry — shipping labels (redacted here by me), parts of packaging labels, a tracing of the scissors, etc. And, of course, the date and her verses for the day. And she still has such beautiful handwriting! ✍️

I've always liked the way this poem takes a phrase literally and works it --- leads to humor, and then something more thoughtful.

Liking today's offering from Poetry Daily: "The Fall of Varia" by D. Nurkse. Such a great opening line:
