👋#commscholars ! Great opportunity here to talk w students about why we don’t study specific platforms, but rather the underlying processes and affordances that shape how platforms engage with, attract, connect, and affect users.

If you studied “MySpace” for example, you’re out of a job. You study how interpersonally networked, identity-driven interactions with traditional Media affect users… you’re in business forever.

🔥MOST IMPORTANT🔥, B builds theory. A does not.

Platform ephemerality is real and even the mighty can fall. In responses to my writing about mortality and the social web, sometimes people push back against the idea that today’s globally entrenched platforms can decay. But they obviously can #platforms #digitaldecay #commscholars #internethistories
