How to Join a Community Garden in New York City - THE CITY https://www.thecity.nyc/2023/6/7/23751825/how-to-join-community-garden

In my community garden plot, a prior occupant put in a rose bush next to a blueberry bush. I'm pretty sure the soil's not acidic enough for the blueberries (I'm doing a soil test today to figure out what sort of adjustment I should do) but they're putting on a good crop for being… maybe two years old? The onion sets I planted last Monday have also started sprouting, and it looks like I'll have a decent crop.

Also, I am reminded of a line that I saw where somebody unintentionally went very, _very_ hard:
"Go build a garden and call it a revolution."
This was unintentionally a very poignant remark, written as an insult. In a community garden, you'll find resiliency, resource sharing, and cross-cultural relationships. We should build more #CommunityGardens.
Happy Monday! I'm sharing a bit of Nature in the City for your Monday Morning to help start the week out right. I hope you all have a wonderful week!

What is the Language of Nature? How can we tap into this dialect and translate what it’s communicating, revealing, and expressing? Barak Ben-Amots shares how listening has improved his life, his farm, and his community.

Time to start seeds for the #communitygardens and mine too. I’m doing collards and cabbage this weekend. They’ll stay in the unheated greenhouse unless we get a hard freeze. Both brassica varieties can tolerate down to the mid 20s fairly well.(once established).
Community gardens in urban areas are probably even more essential than in rural areas where many more have access to plots and soil. Urban roof tops can provide areas of usable space for growing veg and fruit, keeping buildings cooler, providing shade and diversity for birds and bugs. Utilizing empty lots, vacant land and city parks are also great areas for community gardens. Even in my rural area, there is no shortage of thriving and beautiful community gardens. Check the links for some ideas.

I need some help: I’ve joined my #allotment organising committee. Most things were handled informally before and it didn’t go so well, so we have to formalise some things. How is your allotment setup? As #associations, #communitygroups #coop, registered #society or something else? Would also be good to know how you created a bank account and how you forecast for water bills…#communitygardens #horticulture #foodgrowing

Small idea with a big impact 4:
Put in place #legislation that allows for #communitygardens to be implemented. Often they get shut down by #local #government for no real reason. It's a community building exercise that also provides easier access to #healthy #food and provide #foodsecurity to low income #families and #individuals. Ask any family living #paycheck to paycheck, #fruits and #vegetables are NOT a #priority; hotdogs, bread, cheap meat, milk, pasta, and peanut butter are.

Kickstart Arts Community Garden with Nic Stephen
After visiting Kickstart Arts Community Garden in Hobart’s New Town, Russ Grayson came away with the impression that it is heading in that direction. He asked the community garden’s Nic Stephen about how they manage the garden.

The number one thing beginner gardeners get wrong
Can’t keep your plants alive? You’re not alone. Plenty of beginner gardeners give up before they’ve barely started. But don’t go just yet.
