It would be handy if there was a @matrix homeserver package that could handle multiple domains, like @takahe does for ActivityPub. That way many small groups could give their members matrix accounts using their own domain names, while sharing the work and expenses of running a single homeserver.

Are you keen to learn how to self-host your own internet services, like instances of Mastodon or other fediverse software, and gain the skills to help with community-hosting projects? Intimidated by the risks of services you depend on falling over at inconvenient times or losing your data? It's much less anxiety-inducing to learn the basics by hosting instances of web apps, like Searx, Nitter, Bibliogram, or Invidious. Tools for viewing data stored elsewhere.

There may not always be gratis instances. Any that do exist depend on maintainers continuing to provide gratis labour and pay housing costs. Hosting your own makes you that maintainer; many people don't have the skills, time, and funds required to do that. All this also depends on continuing development (or at least maintenance) of the hosted software. Community-hosting is a way of ensuring the sustainability of both the services and the underlying software.
There is nothing in any Fediverse platform's software code that forces it to be for-profit.
Fediverse servers are totally independent and can easily be set up to serve a community or non-profit organisation.
For example, a co-operative could set up its own server and run it just like anything else the co-op does. Votes could be taken on what rules to have, who should be moderating, which other servers to federate with etc.
The technical and financial barriers to ownership of a Fediverse server are surprisingly low, especially if you use a managed hosting service where the hosting company handles the technical stuff.
The price of a managed hosting server starts from about 6 euros per month. The price per month goes up the more users are on the server, but the price per user goes down steeply as a server grows. At the largest server size, the cost per user is only a few cents per user per month.
If we want to mainstream decentralized online services, we need ways to separate the work of running a service node (eg a fediverse instance) from running the hosting infrastructure ("the server"). The founders of Sandstorm were on the right track. Maybe what they were missing was platform co-op structures to run the underlying hosting and make sure they at least cover their upstream costs?

Recently, I've started noticing some existing communities built around YouTube channels or podcasts being brought into the Fediverse by hosting a Mastodon instance for the community. I like this trend.
DistroTube - a YouTube channel

TWIT.tv - a podcasting network

Firefox Send was discontinued this Thursday. However, the command-line tool ffsend still works. It connects to a self-hosted instance of Send maintained by the developer.

FreedomBox 20.14+ (available since Friday) provides the app Bepasty.
Yunohost has Jirafeau.
Framasoft provides a public file-sharing app at Framadrop.org
Please support these projects and donate. 😇

FreedomBox for Communities - Wikibooks
Framasoft grew to 38 services between 2014 and 2017. They will be restricting some of the services and closing some others. This is to focus on a smaller core set of services and not centralize too many users at the same place (the current estimate is 700,000).
We have to take this opportunity to thank @Framasoft for all their work!
Also, it's time for the rest of us to pick up the pace and do community hosting.

"Take the ‘home’ in homebrewserver.club literally and the ‘self’ in self-hosting figuratively
That means we try to host from our homes rather than from data centres - a.k.a. ‘the cloud’ - and we try to host for and with our communities rather than just for ourselves."

Siddartha Malempati is a free software hacktivist from India who came up with the idea of creating community Wi-Fi networks in villages using FreedomBoxes.
In this TEDx talk, he talks about the current state of the Internet infrastructure, how it should have been and how his team of volunteers is part of the solution to bring control over the infrastructure back to the people.

Translation:
FreedomBox is currently being used to provide free community Wi-Fi internet and free software network services in 13 villages in India.
This team of volunteers from FSMI is targeting deployments in 100 villages by the end of the year.
An article about this effort has been published in Eenadu, one of the largest circulated Telugu newspapers in their Sunday magazine.

Attending TEDx MVSR this Saturday.
I'm especially looking forward to the talk by Siddartha Malempati about reclaiming the digital infrastructure for the commons, internet monopolies, community Wi-Fi networks and FreedomBox
(forgot the exact title, sorry!)
It will be an 18-minute talk covering various issues around the topic of digital infrastructure.

"Enough is a platform for journalists, sources and human right defenders to communicate securely and privately."
Looks like it's basically a public #NextCloud instance. Not as anonymous as SecureDrop, but not as bad an option as GDrive or DropBox either.
Seems like the objective is to have a basic alternative to SecureDrop with better UX.

@nielsk I think we already concluded on this discussion that #CommunityHosting is a better solution than self-hosting for now, if you read the original thread of the toot.

But the fact that people are able to maintain their own Android phones gives me hope that self-hosting can be a viable option in the future. (One can still argue that many people still can't maintain their own Android phones).
