I have a feeling completion is this thing that's easy to just provide the 80% of the value by looking at 20% of the examples, but once you peek under the hood it's a long way down, and there is a lot of cobwebs on the way.

That is not to say that bash doesn't participate in this. It certainly does, but it might be why the interface is as it is.

I guess one of the reasons for COMP_LINE being the full string, is that completion is a readline feature, so it runs way before bash has had a chance to parse anything.

Another reason (it seems) is that completion may be requested for things that don't quite parse well (e.g. unpaired quotes, parenthesis or other syntax errors) and yet _some_ completion might be produced in less-than-perfect conditions.

Bash has a completion interface where it invokes an external program with a specific set of arguments and environment variables (complete -C)

I find the documentation around bash completion somewhat arcane. Yes, you can read the source and you can read the bazillion completions for complex things like git, but it's not the same as a proper guide or reference.

What bugs me at present, is the COMP_LINE environment variable. Do I have to parse it like bash would myself? Ugh.

I have to move soon and have been putting evrything off due to frozen in place fears etc, unable to address a lot of issues,
this box was used by a lighting firm to deliver some gear to a billionaire who I know, I basically go through the rubbish they throw out, they are cool with this,
So when I saw this box I thought perfect for transporting a lot of fabric that I have,
So far I have modified it by painting it(1 coat so far), adding handles and wheels and little crimped wire ropes to hold the lid at a certain level of openess, may need another coat of paint and a catch of some sort, but it works as it is
