COMPLEXITY. An new overview on complexity science has dropped and I'm wonder whether to make it my weekend audiobook.

COMPLEXITY SCIENCE. Talks from the Para Limes’ Illusion of Control conference are now online. I recommend the talks by Sander van der Leeuw (illusion of control), Terry Sejnowski (illusion of intelligence re AI), and especially Atsushi Iriki (cognitive roots of human’s innate illusion of control).

In which David Krakauer rights the wrongs of early complexity science, particularly the Waddington adaptive landscape which yields adaptation as action. Adaptation, Krakauer says, is an internal encoding of the world (map, model, etc.), i.e. teleonomic matter. Another exciting interview by @seanmcarroll

2/2 ✂️ I have succeeded with these new approaches in Ferrari F1 Team (where they are needed to survive) and in ThoughtWorks ( @thoughtworks ) , the worldwide leader that pioneered these approaches. And I'm now training, mentoring, and advising other orgs to do the same.

And this is what I will post about. Follow if you want to contribute/challenge/engage in these conversations.

1/2 🧶 I started my career in software development when the speed of tech evolution was accelerating exponentially (and still is, think about AI) & work was mainly an individual (white or blue collar) sport

We had to reinvent the ways of working as a team sport, the tech practices as flexible/adaptable/reversible, and the organisation as an open social community with people (customers & employees) at its centre.

COMPLEXITY SCIENCE. I really enjoyed the Illusion of Control Conference at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences by Para Limes (paralimes.org; Netherlands). It was an interesting mix of interdisciplinary minded speakers and I'm looking forward to future events. Open-access papers to be published in the autumn.

We can't manage complexity. Or to be fair, we have the cognitive skills to manage up to a certain level of complexity and then its really just

A striking success is our ability to understand the fundamental laws of physics (that govern things in the small). A unifying feature behind much of that machinery is that it has relatively simple mathematical structure: linear equations. Another success is when large numbers of things in equilibrium behave statistically in a simple way due to large numbers

A "funny" example of our mental bottleneck are algos. They are only slightly more complex that linear statistical models but stringing a number of functions together creates a non-linearity that becomes an opaque

The problem is that much of the world that concerns us, from the biosphere to our society and economy, is neither elementary nor does it have the statistical homogeneity of gases nor is it anywhere near equilibrium

I've been reading a bit about conceptual systems-agnostic approaches to complexity science and I was wondering.. let's say you had a model or description of a particular mechanism that persisted across functional closures of a system, and it did so regardless of which level of coarse-grained representation you were looking at.

Does that mean that particular mechanism is scale-free? And does that necessarily imply a fractal perturbation? Does scale-free necessarily imply fractal occurence?

And if you find a system with fractal perturbations, does it violate the dynamic sufficiency of the system? Or are it's various levels still said to be functionally closed?

Listening to Change by twitter.com/DamonCentola and his weak ties and strong tries sounds a lot like mobile.twitter.com/kahneman_da thinking fast and slow.

I'm Luca 👋

I have a Tech background in Software Development.
I'm an Agile, Complexity and Lean practitioner.

I plan to post about
- Agile-Agility applied in and outside Tech
- Complexity Science, the practical applications in teams and organisations => Human Complexity

I'm looking for meaningful and kind conversations even while exploring potentially controversial angles 🤝

was reading about stuff from the NECSI and discovered the phrase "high-dimensional chaos" as an alternate term and now i'm never going to call it "complexity science" again

What is the theoretical formalism and data structure for analyzing feedback loops that is the equivalent of how graph theory is to networks?

People here might also be interested in my first book The Shock Doctrine of the Left, which combined leftist / social movement activism with complex systems theory. Its much shorter and doesn't include the spirituality angle of my current projects, but it's otherwise of a piece!
