On Thursday, the Sun Sentinel (South Florida) reported that maternal mortality in 2022 declined to prepandemic levels, appearing to contradict the CDC data I shared earlier in the week showing that maternal mortality has been rising in the US nearly every year for the past several decades, with the pandemic exacerbating the problem.

I will parse the apparent contradiction below:

1st, the Sun Sentinel article said the 2022 tally was based on preliminary CDC data and would likely rise [once the official count was tallied]. So, we don't actually know yet whether the 2022 numbers are higher or lower than the 2021 numbers (the last year for which accurate and official data exist).

2nd, it said the preliminary 2022 data brought numbers down to pre-pandemic levels (i.e., 2019), which were still higher than they'd been in decades. If this turns out to be true, it does not change the fact the women's healthcare in the US has been getting worse, not better, as one would expect, with improvements in medicine and technology. What it would mean (if true) is that the exacerbating effects of the pandemic were finally starting to subside. This could happen because enough pregnant women had developed immunity, either through vaccinations, or through prior infection. Or, because doctors got better at treating pregnant women who developed Covid infections. Or both.

3rd, the main issue here (IMHO) wasn't the pandemic, per se, but the deplorable and still declining state of the US healthcare system, which has contributed to increasing rates of maternal and infant maternity for decades, especially for African American women (in SF, I believe the maternal mortality rate for black women is 4x that of white women); as well as declining life expectancy for all ethnicities (even before the pandemic); and generally high rates of cancer, heart disease, stroke and diabetes. The pandemic, of course, exacerbated these problems, with Covid infection making pregnancy far more dangerous, but also increasing the risk of developing diabetes and heart disease for all people, including pregnant women.

4th, even if the effects of covid on maternal maternity turn out to be declining (which, as of now, I don't think there is sufficient data to say), we may find in 2023, and after, that the SCOTUS ruling on abortion causes an increase in maternal mortality by forcing more women to attempt to carry pregnancies to term, even when it could threaten their health.
