Apropos a discourse on #TikTok about men receiving #compliments only rarely: Today I attended a garage sale run by the local garden club ladies and one of them told me very sincerely how beautiful my hair is.

In fact it was wild and unkempt and bushy and sweaty but I do have an awful lot of the stuff for a man in his 50s. Also I'll admit it's doing a nice natural sandy-grey thing.

Nonetheless I am way overdue for making The Nymph give me my annual tick-season buzz cut with the dog clippers.

So, my son (18) and I (43), and group of my friends, were out at baseball game last night watching one of our other friends play. One of my friends brought her friend who was visiting from interstate.

Today she comes up to me and says that her interstate friend had asked if my son and I were brother and sister, and when she’d told him that we were actually mother and son he’d been shocked and was sure I wasn’t old enough to have a child, let alone one who is now an adult.

It doesn’t take much to make someone’s day, but telling them they look young enough to be their teenage sons sister is a pretty good way to achieve it.

A copy of the letter sent to my GP after seeing a consultant orthopaedic surgeon (I’m now on the list for a total knee replacement) arrived today. Apparently, I am “a delightful 59 year old journalist.”

That’s now official and I won’t have any of this ‘belligerent old hack’ nonsense from anyone.

There's a buzzfeed article about the nicest compliment you ever received--so I will tell you of the most memorable one for me. I ran for mayor of my borough about six years ago (I lost by @ 40 votes), & a woman brought her elderly father to vote. We were chatting outside the precinct, & he turns to me, grins really wide, and says, "You're a real tomato!" Yes, it was a remark on my appearance, but it was said so charmingly & with so much delight that I giggled and blushed.
