On day 20 of the hot compost pile, it had a lot of rain on it so I will have to keep turning it and bring more brown material to it. The cool thing is that a lot of composting worms have shown up in the pile.

I will have to wait until it breaks down into finer material and sift it to collect the worms. It motivates me enough to start another pile and add those earthworms to it.

My 3 ingredients recipe for a good lawn compost:
- Grass clippings, when cut short and without seeds it compost very fast.
- Maple tree leaves, any tree will do but our Japanese maple leaves get composted in no time.
- Worm casting, is the most perfect compost starter.

With only 3 ingredients well-managed from the start, you can make a really fine mix that will suit your lawn needs.
It is free and self-sustainable.

Day 16 on the hot compost pile, it will take a few more days to get to the desired result because there are pine shavings in this pile. Those take a long time to compost.

You also can compost pine shavings in a hugelkultur bed if you need to fill the gaps between the wood logs.

On day 9 of the hot compost pile.

It tends to dry out very fast because it is in full sun, but there are in the pile a lot of worms and biodiversity because it is next to some woods. At this time of the schedule, it is being turned daily so that it can stay aerated.

Doing it really helps when you first start mowing the yard and cleaning all the browns that have not yet decomposed over winter.

When I clean the #worm farm I usually wash it over the same garden bed and drop a little #vermicast on it every time.

Over winter I have noticed a clear improvement in the soil where the casting is dropped.

This is a breakthrough because if it is done over several beds I will facilitate the applications.

@pawsforthought thank you, I wanted to do this for a while, but I figured it was a better idea to get on a server that fits my content with a nice community. Today is a happy day. The content I wrote on my old account is still on #CompostAtHome that I have kept maintaining.

Get a 20-USgallon bin with a lid. In the bottom of the bin layer, a 5US-gallon bucket of #brown finely chopped. Then layer a 5US-gallon bucket of #green finely chopped. Then layer a 5US-gallon bucket of compost and garden soil.

Make sure to drill holes on top of the bin. The temperature should be around 70F at all times. Make sure that the compost is always moist at 70%

Turn it daily it will give you about 10US-gallons of #compost per month.

Bin will be ready in 3 weeks

It is finally time for me to start indoor seeds.

The work done this winter with the #compostathome bins and worm bins let me make some free potting mix.

This is a good time of the year to start amending #nodig #garden beds with #compost.

This preparation work will allow your beds to be ready for spring summer and fall.

It is also a good time to start #composting.

Add #carbon to a #CompostAtHome bin

Wood chips, sawdust, #cardboard, #newspaper or paper, dried leaves, #straw or hay, pine needles, nutshell, and last but not least #compost.

The more it is chopped the fastest the #fungi in your bin will process it.

It is like with #compost If you make a big pile the first days you feel happy about it, then you start to forget it, then troubles come in the pile and you feel you did not succeed

Instead, work with a small bin, and check that all is well if trouble comes you can fix them
