so it turns out that if the student has at least one external committee member who is not a #llinguist, the student ends up brilliantly answering all of the questions in their oral comprehensive exam in a way that's also intelligible to a non-specialist. 💞 💪 🧠 🎓

I’ve switched to reading Jack Halberstam’s remarkable 1998 book, “Female Masculinity,” and she has a whole section discussion the bathroom politics of butch-looking women that could be published today, unedited. It’s eerie, and a bit depressing, to see her lament that three decades of feminist scholarship didn’t move the gender needle very much, 2x years ago during a nasty political backlash to trying just that. #comps

Quick question for you publising types re: determining who agented a certain book. If an author doesn't have an acknowledgements section where that info would typically be, any suggestions as to how one finds out who the specific agent is (i.e., not just the publisher)? Thanks!

Since this summer when I started working with an editor on line edits, I've read 26 books that were potential comps!

So far I've found only 1 fully convincing comp... but I've got another 7 added to my list while we do the next round of edits & I've learned a lot!

Has anyone #read anything they enjoyed recently involving/ret-telling/reimagining Greek/Roman mythology in a contemporary setting (as a shadow world or similar)???

A lot happened in the last week. I got my first academic jobs teaching #history at UMass in the Winter and Spring, and teaching #Italian at Wheaton College in the Spring. Plus I passed #comps today. Now to nap or start course prepping?

I once slept on a pile of broken glass on a rooftop in #Fallujah, where both Iraqi #partisans and a #MarineCorps gunnery sergeant were trying to kill me. And I can say without exaggeration that #comps have been the worst experience of my life. What an enormous stressful, frustrating, and demoralizing waste of time. Off the top of my head, I can think of at least 3 better capstone experiences for PhDs.

And now off to be a committee member at a PhD student's oral comprehensive exam. He's gonna do spectacular!
