I'm having fun with the option of . So far I can tell that if the closest object is at a quasi-macro distance it's better to increase the number of focusing points and frames; also, forget about moving subjects, they always come out blurred (animals, wind). I'm still practicing, but first results are encouraging. 😀

Computational Photography: What is It and Why Does It Matter?

Justin Hein says:
‘There’s a reason why my iPhone is often the only camera I’ll carry with me. Its imaging quality allows me to take good photos without having to carry any additional gear’

@thesixdave did you think that those Snapchat filters actually gave you cat ears or what?

Can't decide if this is genius or problematic. reddit.com/r/Android/comments/

Apparently other Android phones have been doing this for a while.

"The camera is just guessing what’s in your image. If your image is “out-of-band”, that is, not something the software is trained to guess, any attempts to computationally “improve” your image are just going to royally trash it up."

@greggadams I suspected was making a lot of these up while losing many others in cleanup, so I took the liberty of running your photo through an online tool. Well, after giving it a decently thorough try of over 10 minutes, it failed to identify the part of the sky your photo shows nova.astrometry.net/status/699 I mean it's a nice looking photo, it just doesn't align particularly well with reality.

One thing that bugged me the most with it is that it made all the stars the same colour and there's a sudden cutoff at a certain apparent magnitude of stars in the clearest portion of the sky where there should be more fainter stars visible than behind the clouds, and yet it's exactly the opposite in your photo.

I'm attaching a quick test of a similar scene but using a "dumb" for comparison (just using a kit lens, wanted to see how well it'd do). Astrometry tool identified the in 50s nova.astrometry.net/status/699

I guess we'll have to invent new branch of with "computational photography" just as we're overdue having one for generated contents like , or similar. :breadthink:

I traverse the trail between my home in the yurt and the decrepit old original farmhouse many times per day. Years ago, I 3D printed tiny LED light fixtures to illuminate the trail so I wouldn't always have to carry a flashlight. Too many times in my 30 years here, I've inadvertently collided with black cats that do not understand that I cannot see in the dark.

See more explanation in the Alt-Text...

Not terrible for and a through the closed window of a car. (I was stopped at a light) But should photojournalists use AI photography?

I love the magic around and . A 2D video taken from an iPhone moving on a rail becomes a 3D image on a glasses-free display like the Looking Glass Portrait from Looking Glass Factory.

Taking my self portrait with this method feels like I imagine sitting still for a portrait in the 1800's felt like. We're in the infancy of what media will be someday.
