Pretty disappointing news overnight from International Football Association Board (IFAB) who have rejected the proposal for a trial for temporary concussion substitutes. Their justification saying that the stakeholders "couldn't agree" appears to be political spin on the situation. However, while concussion protocols can be improved generally in all sports, I am surprised that IFAB do not look to these sports and their head injury assessments for guidance on developing their own system. Despite the rhetoric from these sports saying they "consult the science", all these sports work in silos. Stop kicking the can down the road...

Interesting headline in regional #fairfax news mastheads today, even though I explicitly said, and quoted in the article, we were not about stopping sports (there's a difference between "modifiy" and "limit"). Just published #openaccess in the last week. Our study looking response time data in retired contact sport athletes with a history of repetitive head trauma and #concussions completing cognitive and somatosensory testing. We found no differences in outcomes (i.e., accuracy and/or errors) but we did see a significant difference in response times. The takeaway? Similar to previous studies, retired contact sport athletes can complete basic cognitive testing as accurately as aged-matched controls, but they take longer to respond. "#CTE is a disease of exposure," Professor Alan Pearce from #Latrobe University said.
"We have a lot of players who might have had one or two concussions, but they're likely to have had probably 20,000 or 30,000 smaller hits.
"That's not just in #football, or #rugby, but you know it's in other sports as well. It's in the military, we've even got concerns about domestic violence.

Disappointing to see #concussion protocols being enacted in the FIFA World Cup. Any signs and symptoms of concussion after an impact requires the player to be removed from play. Athletes are conditioned to continue playing, so they will argue to remain on the field, sometimes aggressively (aggression also being a sign). Research shows that concussed athletes are not in a position to make a decision to continue playing and team medical staff need to protect athletes from themselves. #concussioninsport #braininjury
