The history of Senate confirmation votes of Supreme Court Justices is quite fascinating and says a lot about where we are as a nation. It truly reflects the increased politicization of SCOTUS. The last time that the Senate voted against confirmation was in relation to the infamous Robert Bork. (Back in those days, it was unthinkable to confirm an extremist Justice.) And before that, with the exception of the three attempted replacements of Fortas, Justices were confirmed by a comfortable majority for decades. This changed with the close vote on Clarence Thomas, but continued until Gorsuch, Barrett, and Kavanaugh were confirmed by a handful of ayes.
