Just learned about the -MeinhofEffect, which relies on selective attention and confirmation bias and makes you believe you're seeing something more often, even if the frequency of it hasn't actually increased.

No doubt I will see it mentioned everywhere now...

"It is amazing the degree to which some people will engage in confirmation bias and believe absolute nonsense, even as the facts show the opposite is true. Over the past few months, we’ve gone through the various “Twitter Files” releases, and pointed out over and over again how the explanations people gave for them simply don’t match up with the underlying documents". techdirt.com/2023/06/05/twitte

believe it or not, I'm not being sarcastic or mean in any way. I say this with complete honesty: whoever you are, you have worth, you are deserving of love. good luck. ❤️

Bishop (2020) [2] described a particular cognitive process, confirmation bias, which makes it much easier to attend to and remember things that are aligned with our prior expectations. is a natural tendency that in everyday life that often serves a useful purpose in reducing our , but which is incompatible with objective scientific thinking" [1]

If you ask, l can show that l base my posts, all my statements, that are tagged with or , on the . If l am speculating, l let the reader know.

Any layperson can say, "however, in my opinion", followed by their personal version of any particular narrative. We could call that wishful thinking. Rather than basing their ideas on science (in this context the science of psychology)

A superiority complex, for example, nationalism, causes

However, an inaccurate superiority complex, the belief to want to be better than another or more abstract concept, is often caused by wishful thinking. In other words, not basing their opinions on the evidence.

Therefore, your opinion, whilst not incorrect, was used in an incorrect way. You brought in your opinion, to suggest that the OP's description of the public's "wishful thinking", was not correct. However, folk often can not help but feel their opinions are valid if they are unaware of the scientific literature on a subject (that contradicts those opinions)

Ultimately, we can say that less logical people (comparative psychology) are more probable to not understand nor study the science on any particular subject - But, in many examples, believe they know better than a scientist on certain subjects (Ego). A superiority complex caused by wishful thinking, an implicit cognitive bias, that in turn causes an implicit confirmation bias (there are explicit forms also)

So, when the UK public, or many people in different countries, hear their politicians say we are the " leaders of", even before it's said, the public wants to believe it. If they already have wish-based reasoning, they are more probable to believe those words at "face value", & not fact-check them (as is the case with more than half of the UK public - in this "nature depleted" context)

Faith-based thinking is very common. It's pseudo-reasoning. Many people like to believe that they know why other people think, say, write, etc, the way they do. Many people, at best, read magazine-quality "psychology" narratives on social media.

Their opinions are what science-based psychologists term "folk psychology". Folk psychology is generally a psychological "soup" of half right, half wrong, guessing (opinions)

For example, for anyone to have an evidence-based comprehension of the psychology of humans, they must have a reasonable understanding of evolutionary biology.

How many people qualify? Folk psychology is the dominant opinionated way people reason.

That river has been crossed and confirmation bias is a burden we cannot carry with us anymore. Again, judging and prejudice are natural evolutionary traits but they are raits that can no longer be justified.
