High up Monte Sammucro (1205m), central Italy, the location of our WW2 conflict archaeology project. The memorial next to hill 720. The entire battlefield between Monte Sammucro and Monte La Difensa is visible, from the Mignano gap up past Cassino to the Liri valley. More info in image text.

Image from a Great Arab Revolt Project site, which ran for 10 years, investigating the evidence and activities of T. E. Lawrence in the (now) Jordanian desert during WW1.

The view from Fassuah Ridge Fort, a previously unknown military position used by the Ottomans/Germans.

I usually follow back, & really appreciate boosts. Thanks.

Fragment from an enemy aircraft. Shot down by wing commander Harbourne Mackay. The Nazi “swastika” symbol painted on the fin was cut out and kept as an obvious symbol of the enemy. The hole caused by machine gun fire would have added to the symbolic slur of this “souvenir”

Why is materiality important?
In it is an approach studying past human societies through their material remains. Materiality is the proof of human behaviours. Also, the reminder of the most awful activities.
Archaeology is key in building democratic societies.
