Seems like a good time to mention Remake, a 1995 novel by Connie Wiilis:

"Willis (Doomsday Book), a fan of old movies, uses them cleverly and thoughtfully in Remake, her fourth solo novel. Roughly 20 years into the future, computer graphics have ended live production in Hollywood. Tom, the narrator, reluctantly pillages old films for remakes starring dead actors or alters them to suit the politico-social correctness of the moment."

Començant lectura conjunta a la terrassa amb la comèdia telepàtica de la Connie Willis. S'hi està fresc i sona un concert llunyà. A veure si m'ho passo tan bé com les tres primeres vegades que ha m'he llegit el llibre 😉

I'm halfway through Connie Willis's DOOMSDAY BOOK and something seems very off. The novel is driven by the ILLUSION of plotting rather than plotting rooted in active behavior that drives the story forward. (Kivrin, for example, has spent most of the time ailing in bed from a mysterious disease.)

I thought it was just me. But when I picked up my Earthsea volume, I was completely immersed in the story. Same went for a number of other authors I took for a test spin just to see if my faculties had momentarily atrophied.

I am forced to conclude that Willis, at least in this book, lacks depth as well as voice. The Oxford professors are all thin and interchangeable. Kivrin is not a fully realized character, but an object for Willis to do a research dump on her findings about the Middle Ages. And this book just isn't very good.

I suspect that this book was a hit in 1992 because, back then, speculative fiction readers were more sheltered and ostracized than they are now.

Fair warning, this post is a bit of a nonsense; so many books have made me what I am that 700 would not suffice - so I will just name the ones that come to me first:
: The Deptford Trilogy
: Needful Things
: American Gods
: Wise Children
: Lincoln's Dreams
: The code of the Woosters
: Dandelion Wine

@doctroid quite by coincidence, I spent a few minutes yesterday buying and downloading the Kindle version of 's Blackout for my wife who wanted something good to read. Since I discovered Doomsday last summer I've been binging on Audio readings of her series.

@scoobyshakespeare @nyrath OMG! Have you read Doomsday Book (and To Say Nothing of the Dog, and Blackout/All Clear), by Connie Willis? They discuss this exact thing! (With the Black Death and WWII, for settings and funsies.)

Re-reading/listening to Connie Willis’ To Say Nothing of the Dog, and am very amused by how well she manages to hide the fact that great swathes of her books are just “Old Man Yells At Cloud” diatribes against current culture (and sometimes past culture, too.)
