54 years ago today: The Buddhist Churches of America released instructions to young members on how to apply for conscientious objector status on the basis of their Jodo Shinshu Buddhist conviction during the Vietnam War. The pamphlet arose from Rev. Yamaoka's counseling of Japanese American Buddhists, some of whom became the first American Buddhist Conscientious Objectors.
