Until an hour ago I could have said something like "Rape is not sex, just like a beating is not dancing."

But now I've read what #AngelaChen has to say about it in #Ace.
"Rape is not sex" implies that sex is not violent or wrong, but it can be both.
Rape and sex are a spectrum.

No means no, but yes can mean any number of things:
* oh my god, yes please!
* yes, because it's you asking
* okay, let's get this over with, so you will shut up about it
or even:
* yes, because I'm afraid to say no.

In which of these situations is it okay to assume consent?

A) Ever since you met this person you've always been hugging* as a greeting. You don't remember who started it. As far as you can tell they are hugging all their other friends as a greeting and you've never seen any signs indicating that they don't like it.
Is it okay to assume they are okay with you hugging them?

A2) * alternatively insert kissing (on the cheeks), shaking hands or bumping fists instead of hugging.
Is it okay then?

B) You two have had sex before and they seem like they want it.
Is it okay to assume consent then?

C) Your best friend is crying and they seem like the need a hug.
Is it okay to assume they want one?

D) The photographer is telling you to stand closer so everybody is in the picture.
Is it okay to put your hands around the person next to you and pull them closer? Does it depend on your relationship?

I personally wouldn't #assume #consent in any of the cases, but for some reason in situation A (not A2) I never ask, but just hug them as a greeting. I blame my social phobia. It would be totally awkward to start asking now.
B doesn't apply to me. In situation C I would ask and I'd never do D.
It probably depends on how we would like others to behave, when it comes to how we handle consent.

When a dog comes straight your way, wags their tail and lays their head in your lap, you don't have to ask if you can pet the dog.
