This is the reason why l started to study the #science of #psychology

Whilst studying for a #ConservationBiology degree at University, there were Doctors and Professors of Conservation biology, ecology, etc., who were lecturing students regarding #ClimateChange & species extinctions, & yet, as with many relatively rich people, had personal excuses why they eat meat, flew on Jets, enjoyed BBQs, campfires & generally thought nothing about filling up their fossil-fueled vehicles

AAAS: "South Africa to ban fishing around African penguin colonies for 10 years." African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) are only found along coastlines of Namibia and South Africa + are at risk of extinction, the only penguins on the continent. "The number of breeding pairs in South Africa plummeted by 73% from 1991 to 2021, dropping from 42,500 to 10,400." A large part of the problem is fishing boats competing for the stocks of anchovy and sardine that are the main food source for the birds. Environmental + climate change are contributing factors. "To see whether limiting fishing could help penguin populations bounce back, between 2008 and 2021 officials experimented with closing the waters around some islands for staggered 3-year periods." Now a decade-long closure of fishing in the waters around 6 islands—Dassen Island, Robben Island, Dyer Island, St. Croix Island, Bird Island, and Stony Point—is planned, although "exactly how large an area will be covered could change based on proposals from fishing and conservation groups." The longer closure will allow scientists to gather more data on how fishing bans affect both adult and juvenile penguin survival. "The ban could also benefit two other endangered seabirds, the Cape gannet and Cape cormorant, that also rely on sardine and anchovy as their primary food source." Penguins are 'closely tied to the islands to be able to feed their chicks—the fishing industry however is not,' said Simon Elwen, director of Sea Search Research and Conservation. If growing human population pressure is hard to control even for photogenic species, the risk is doubtless worse for so many others.   #penguins    #extinction    #conservationbiology
