#OTD Lester Rowntree, American #Botanist & #Writer, is born.
A fierce #Conservationist, Lester believed living w/ plants led to understanding. She was often compared to the incredible #PlantExplorer David Douglas, but unlike Douglas, who died young, Lester lived to be 100.
She wrote,
"I [approach] plants from the # Gardener's, not the scientist's, standpoint...
I [write] from my own notes, taken on the spot, of the things the #Plants have told me in personal interviews."

Aside from the #SchoolShooting, May had never heard of Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
She was surprised to learn she'd been born in MN. Her mother was a concert #Violinist. Her earliest memory was her dad reading The Song of #Hiawatha, which reduced her to tears.
A South Florida #Conservationist, Marj wrote in her seminal #Book, The #Everglades (1947),
"...#Gardens of branching corals... ribbons of angelfish & #PARROTFISH & moonfish... creatures are everywhere."

Leo acquired 160,000 acres of the #Ozarks to create #PioneerForest, which he gifted to #Missouri in 2005. His foundation protects natural areas.
Leo's #Voicemail greeting was,
"I'm out planting a forest. Please leave your name & number, & I'll try to get back to you before it matures."

This is an original #illustration of Nicolaus Copernicus that appeared on page 161 of "Exploring Science" by Jonathan Leonard (1959). Louis Darling, the illustrator of this and many other #books about #nature and #science, was also an early #environmentalist / #conservationist. In addition to his work with other authors, Darling and his wife Lois published numerous texts in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s dedicated to teaching people about the natural world.
