Much of what we call "conservative ideology" was invented by tobacco companies to fight govt efforts to protect the public.

Many "conservative movement" operatives came from tobacco PR & lobbyng firms.

The author of the Powell Memo was a tobacco lawyer.

The industry did extensive polling & focus group testing of messaging & came up with a formula, smaller govt, nanny state, stop big government meddling, etc.
